Icelandic Runes Staves #1 - Duration: 15:17.expecto patronum !
sorry?!
huh...huh...
expelliarmus !
are you trying to use Harry Potter spells on me?
Harry Potter?! No no no no...
this is a famous book os spells!
nãaaa that's Harry Potter mate
bah...
so what?!
Come on! You want real witchcraft? You should take a look at Icelandic Rune Staves
Icelandic Runic what?!
I will give a couple of examples about rune staves to our friends back home
huh..huh... all right...
Hello friends! My name is Arith Härger
and today I'm going to talk about the Icelandic rune staves
so the other day I have given you a video about the rune staves and I have given you an
historical introduction and what the runes staves are, what they were used for
and I'll leave a link down below in the description so you might watch that video
so today I'm going to talk about the Icelandic rune staves
I will show you the symbols, the charms ,their names, what they are used for and well...
I will not delve too much on the information of each symbol, in the future I will make a
video for each symbol a sort of advanced classes for Icelandic rune staves
so today I'm going to give you just an introduction to the symbols a sort of
Icelandic rune staves for beginners, I hope you enjoy it and well... let's get started
I forgot to tell you please turn on the subtitles, there will be a lot of strange terms in this video
all right let's start with one of the most famous rune staves
the Aegishjálmur
this is one of those symbols I would like to
make a video just about it because there is a lot we can tell
but this is a little introduction to the symbols so let's keep it simple
this one is often translated to "Helm of Awe" its basic form was that of a four or eight fold
equal-armed cross with branches at its terminals
the Aegishjálmur is mentioned in the saga of Sigurd, when Sigurd slays the great serpent Fáfnir
in order to win the treasure hoard of the Niflungs (Nibelungen)
one of the "objects" of power he gets is the Aegishjálmur, it's something ethereal not a helmet in its
usual sense but something that surrounds the wearer with a tremendous power
to terrify and subdue one's enemies the power is concentrated between the eyes
and it is often associated with the power of serpents to paralyze their prey
not a concept exclusively from northern Europe
but an ancient indo-european concept so basically this is also used as a symbol
of protection and after Christianity was introduced in Iceland
this magical sign was also named Solomon's innsigli
this one is called
Að unni
and it seems to be a combination of the most basic and simplified forms
of the Aegishálmur as shown previously and right here again
it is said to be used so a woman might love a man, however, the most basic forms of the Aegishálmur
of a four equal-armed cross, is only mentioned as to win a girl's love
it's used while fasting and the symbol is drawn with one's spittle in the palm of the hand
when the person greets the girl whom he desires to have
and it should be the right hand
this one is called Hraethigaldur simply to put fear on an enemy
if you want your enemy to be afraid of you when he sees you then
carve these staves on a piece of shrub-oak and wear it in the middle of your chest
and make sure that you see your enemy before your enemy sees you
it is interesting to notice this detail of carving the symbol on oak
trees have always been considered to be magical in nature or having
magical properties, and the oak in Norse witchcraft is associated with the power
of the Thur rune or Thurizas and obviously with the God Thor
and in here it seems to act as a terrifying apotropaic talisman or in other words
to ward off harm or evil influences
this one looks like someone was learning how to write
these runes staves are to play a sick joke on someone so the person can't hold
food down all day - carving these staves on cheese or fish and have the one eat it
whom you wish to make a sport of, and whatever the person eats that day will be of no use to the person
these 16 staves seem to be all highly stylized runic symbols
arranged in two rows of eight, their full meaning has yet to be decoded maybe
because they also seem a mixture of Celtic alphabet which wouldn't be
surprising since the Norwegian settlers took their Celtic slaves into Iceland
and there was probably a mixture between the two traditional witchcraft realities
well this is just great speaking of learning how to write
learning how to make rune staves probably goes through this simple geometrical process
anyway this one is a tricky one and it's to hinder a person
from coming to your house - if you wish that someone in particular would not
come to your house, property, or an area you own, carve this stave on Rowan wood
when the Sun is at its zenith and walk three times with the Sun and three times on
the contrary direction of the Sun around the area while holding onto the Rowan stick
on which the stave was carved and onto some sharp-spined thorn-grass, a thistle
and then put both of them up over your door in the middle
again the magical properties of a tree - Rowan wood is thought to have a life-giving power and
to be able to control otherworldly things it is also used in a contrary sense
as a bringer of death
the use here is to protect the house from evil entities or to terrify those who would come uninvited
The thistle is an herbal correspondence to the Fehu rune
very much connected with the "bringer of life" so in a way the combination of the herb and the
rowan-wood is to create or imbue power by mixing opposite polarities
who knows?!
these things are never clear
Dreprún
to kill another's livestock
one should write these staves on a leaf and cast it into the person's horse's hoof print
then some of his livestock will die, surprisingly this one is the least
cruel rune stave around at least the person is not trying to kill the other
in a gruesome and terrible way but it's killing innocent beings
in Iceland livestock was the source of wealth for farmers, that which gave them sustenance
and money so losing livestock really was a blow in the stomach leading people to
despair and poverty
Þjófastafur
to use against thieves
this kind of rune staves are the ones you will find the most
to find at thief, to use against a thief, to discover a thief
these are just a few examples and it's understandable
the great amount of rune staves against thieves
these rune staves probably appeared when Iceland went through a troublesome
economic period when they ceased to trade with mainland Europe and probably at the
beginning of the 12th century a time of civil strife, old patterns of feuding
exacting of blood vengeance and the like, began to emerge again there was a great
economical crisis and people would start to steal from each other and well....
with the previous rune stave to kill livestock and end people's wealth
more reasons to steal
well this one can be literally called "að stilla alla reiði"
to calm all anger or to end strife, yes as we have seen there were troublesome periods in Iceland
in order to calm all anger
make this stave on your forehead with the index finger of your left hand and say:
it is the helm of awe which I bear between my eyes, let the anger melt, let the strife stop
may every man rejoice in me as Mary rejoiced in her blessed son when
she found him on the victory-rock - in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit
I picked this one on purpose so you can understand what I have spoken
in the previous video about the historical background of the rune staves
the Christian influence not only on the symbols but also on the invocations
made when calling upon the power of the symbols
by the end of this very Christian invocation you should also read thus:
"Ölver, òdinn, Illi"
everything may your will bewilder
may God himself with mastery sent love between us
this three-fold Odinic invocation includes the name of Odin beside "Ille"
"the evil one", which may have been an old name for Odin since he was called Bölverkr
"evil worker" and was also called "the father of all evil" and unlike you might think
that he was associated with evil due to Christianity
this association with evil was made during pagan times because Odin in his essence
wasn't a good god nor a god of wisdom and the All-father but a God of war and death
now let's talk about rune staves much older than the ones presented
previously with less Christian influences and much more geometrical and highly complex
Galdrahöll or Hall of magical incantations, which was carved on
the skin of a Water Rail, which is a bird
it's unclear the use of this rune stave
probably protection or concealment of something
Galdratöluskip
it was used to ruin ships, in scandinavian societies ships were not only a means of
transportation but also for trading goods, at a certain point scandinavian
societies highly dependent upon naval trading routes
the soils in Scandinavia are hard to cultivate but surprisingly the majority of
Scandinavians were farmers but during the Viking Age they became seafarers and
explorers coming in contact with so many different cultures and bringing back home
all manner of goods, the Norse became traders and their lives dependent on
buying and selling goods rather than cultivating the soils or herding cattle
so staves to ruin ships have exactly the same purpose as the ones to kill cattle
the objective was to hit hard on another's property and source of wealth
which leads to the rune stave or let's call them Galdrastafir or Galdramyndir
these are the proper terms for rune staves and this one is called Kaupaloki(e)
you will most likely find it in this shape or like this or even like this
it's a rune stave to prosper in trade and business
one should cut this sign on a stave of beech wood and wear it in the middle of one's breast for success and
victory at buying and selling
the name of this stave, Kaupaloki(e), consists of the word for "buying" or "making business deals" which is
Kaupa
and "Loki" derived from "Loka" - to lock, shut - and so it literally means "deal closer"
interesting enough this might indicate the origins of the god Loki
not a god of trickery and mischief but a God whose chief function was the role of
closing or concluding a cycle of existence and coming to an end with this
and coming to an end with this video
don't worry there are loads of rune staves and I will probably make another video with the rest
so let's end this with Draumstafir and the Draumastafur
this sign must be made on st. John's night, st. John's Eve is at the
23rd of June so this is probably referring to the
night of the 24th of June the feast of Saint John which closely coincides with
the summer solstice also referred to as midsummer
so during this night you carve this sign on silver or on white leather and if anyone sleeps on it the person
will dream what the person wants, the same principle goes for these other rune staves
carving the staves on fir wood and sleep upon it makes you dream what you want
and this one right here you carve the symbol on oak but you place it
on someone else's pillow or whatever place this person will lay its head on
and the person will have dreams according to your will
pretty cool huh?
and since I'm about to say goodbye and ending this video on rune staves to make peopel sleep
I'm sure you are already feeling sleepy after all this information I've been giving
here you have a rune stave to make someone go to sleep
if you want to lull a person to sleep then carve these staves on
alder wood and put it under the person's head and the person will certainly sleep
until you take it away, don't forget to take it away or you might let the person dream for weeks
which I'm sure for some people would be great, I myself need an entire season sleeping
anyway again a type of wood - alder is often associated
with fire and wakefulness and it corresponds to the Sowilo rune
again we see in here the use of innate polarity to evoke the opposite effect
alright friends thank you so much for watching and don't worry I will make another video
about the rest of the rune staves
if you liked this one, of course
even if you didn't I will make it anyway
so thank you so much for watching, see you on the next video
all the links to my social media are down below at the description
and as always...
tack för idag!

First of these locations is the small mining town of Darkwater Crossing in Eastmarch

Now travel to Windhelm and find the alchemy shop called the White Phial
Find Quintus Navale to deliver Sondas' note and you will receive your reward oh
Dear dark water crossing needs medicines for its miners. I'll see about getting this order filled right away
Finally the last objective will bring us to Agnas mill located in the Pale marked here on the map
You can easily get there by leaving Windhelm and following the road to the right
You will need to enter Aries house and speak with her
She will give you the final objective
Sorry, I thought skull the elder sent you. We've got an order to fail and he's not known for patience
Look if you're heading towards dawn star anytime soon. Can you give the yard this note? Let him know he'll get his lumber
Thanks
Lastly we travel to Dawnstar and enter the White Hall to speak with Jarl Skald the Elder
Give him Aries note to finish the last objective
What's this? Oh? That's right the Timbers from Angus? Mill I?
Swear that
Aryan her men would make fine, Stormcloak recruits
Pity we can't spare the lumber two can script them err. Take this for your time and all that
Okay, so that's it for this video. I hope you all found this somewhat helpful
if you were looking for a quick and easy way to start out the game with a decent bit of gold also I
Apologize for going slow on some of the NPC names they can get quite difficult to pronounce
But uh, anyways this is my first
real attempt at trying to make a walkthrough guide completely with commentary and
editing
So I hope you enjoyed the video and let me know how I did in the comment section below
Let me know if there's anything I can improve as well
I'm not gonna ask for any likes or subscriptions
You can do that if you feel I did a good and thorough job of the content
I'll have plenty of other videos. Just like this probably coming out pretty soon
So you can be looking out for those.
Anyways, thanks again for watching, and I'll see you on the next video

Cut the baby squid into rings,
sear them briefly in olive oil, sprinkle lightly with salt and let them marinate in some olive oil with lime.

Simply mix the marinated squid rings with the peach,
adding a few chopped fresh almonds, smoked almonds,

Learn Flexbox Tutorial for Beginners Part1 - Three Columns Layout - Duration: 11:45.Flexbox tutorial.
So from this tutorial we are going to know about a new kind of
property used in CSS which is known as flexbox.
Now what is this flexbox?
[Music...]
Now in our previous cases when we had to create a 3 column layout inside our main HTML
page all we had to do, suppose this is the main box which should be lying along the
center and this is the left box that should be lying in the left side and this should
be the right box.
Our intention is to keep this left box keeping it in the extreme left,
this middle box, that means the central box which should be lying in the center and the
right box that should come in the extreme right position.
Now in doing so the basic thing that we have done here so far, we have
created a main wrapper that will wrap all those 3 child elements inside.
Then we have created this left box, the central box and
the right box.
And all we did in case of left box, we have used a float left condition,
that is a float left condition will keep this box floating in the left position.
Central box, it was provided with an attribute of
floating left too, that means it will be floating in the left position and in case
of extreme right box we have used the float right condition, that means this box will
be floating towards the right of the page.
And that is how what we did we just aligned all
these 3 boxes into a particular horizontal line and we have assigned their respective
orders that was executed in the template.
So this is the thing that we could have seen in our previous cases.
Now the problem is, in this situation all we had to do we have
to create some more coding, some more attributes such to keep those boxes in left
or right or these sort of things.
But using the flexbox that makes it more easier.
We will be getting the same display as we can see over here, but moreover there are
some added features and those features are to
be discussed in this and in the coming up tutorials.
Today is the first part of this tutorial, so stay tuned.
If we have a look into our final product then this is the final demonstration that we
are going to observe.
This blue box, its now getting enhanced it is now getting thrice
in size of the other boxes used over here and despite of their irregular contents, you
can see that there are more contents over here; if you see into the contents this is
the content which is a lot, then comes another
content, it is quite a small one, and then comes another content; but despite of the
amount of content inside these boxes, still we
can see that all of them practically grabbing an equal height.
But in case of using a common css approach, we can see that with
the growing tendency of these contents, the growing nature of these contents, those are
not practically getting any equal height.
See it over here yourselves.
This is the first one, it has a shorter height.
This is the second one, it has relatively a bigger height.
And this is the least of all the contains, and that is so it is getting the
shortest height.
So irregularity inside those contents and irregularity into the heights
of the divs - but this is not the actual case that should have been encountered as we can
see that all of them are practically getting an equal height.
So this is the scope of another tutorial, first of all let's learn how
to create that 3 column layout that we are going to witness in this tutorial.
Now you full just look into our project then we can see that it is practically the HTML
that we have used in creating all these three divs.
This is the index.htm and in the first case, we have wrapped everything inside
this common div which is known as mother-wrapper.
And then we have called in all those 3 child elements accordingly as we
can see this is the left box, this is the central box and this is going to be the right
box.
Now if we get back into stylesheet.CSS we can see that this is the case which is
observed in case of mother-wrapper which has all these attributes.
Here comes the width, the 1000px, and we have settled them into
a margin 0 auto condition that means everything inside, those will be practically
lying into the central position no matter what it is.
And then comes the left box where we have used this attribute which is known
as float left to keep the box floating into the left position.
And then comes the right box we have kept the box into a float right
condition.
And a central box where I have kept it into a float left position. And we
have used a clearfix option over here such that floating gets cleared in both sides of
the block element.
So these are the thing those are used and as a result all we can see this is the result
that we have learnt so far from our previous CSS tutorials.
Now this is the mother-wrapper and inside this mother-wrapper I am using this particular
term display flex.
Another thing, in our previous cases when we learn CSS tutorial we
always tried to bind our contents inside a common div which has a width of 1000px.
Now this is practically having a definite meaning;
in our previous ages or in the early of this decade we have seen that 1024 by 768px
monitor dimension was a common thing and a major percentage to be used among the world
wide users and that is why in case of Desktop applications, we have used that particular
div width as a threshold value and we have kept our contents inside a 1000px div; but
this is the age of mobile responsiveness and if you want to create some mobile responsive
website then the first thing is all you have to do you have to lift off this kind
of width specification.
So I am discarding all kind of width specification here, and in case
of this clearfix option all we are doing we are commenting it off.
Now we have created a display flex option into the
mother-wrapper.
That means the main div, the main block element that is wrapping
everything inside.
So let's get back to index.html and here we will be commented or we
don't need this clearfix option here, press control + s, get back to your project and
reload.
Now we can see that with the usage of a particular term known as display flex we
can now create that 3 column layout, that 3 column structure that we are intending to
build, that we have built previously with the aid of CSS now we are building it with
the aid of cSS and flexbox.
And you can see that already that equal height option is placed
into your web structure.
Now if you want to have a particular proportion such as this blue box, it will be having
a size more than other two boxes; now in this particular case, now we use the term...
And in case of Central box, central box means this one this blue box, we want it to be
at the size of rise Of The Other two boxes; so we will be using here flex 3 option.
Just reload and now you can see that the middle
blue box it is now thrice the size of the waste of these two boxes that we can observe
over here.
Now suppose that no this is not the display we want; this blue box should appear at the
extreme left position and then comes both of the two boxes.
So what should be done in these cases?
So that is why we need to specify this order.
In case if you want to change the order in which it should appear then all
you need to do then you need to specify the order that means this will be appearing first,
the central box, then you want this left box to appear just after it.
So it will be of an order to..
And this is the right box which will be appearing in the next order.
So what we have done here?
We have provided a display flex option in the mother-wrapper
that has wrapped everything inside it, then we have created a flex condition
that means the size of these child elements those are present inside the mother-wrapper
and then you have specified the order; the order at which day should appear into your
web page.
So all those things are done over here.
Just press control+s, get back to your project and reload and now you can see that
the blue box which was seemingly appearing into the middle part it is no appearing in
to the extreme left position; then comes the
orange box which should be appearing in the extreme left it is not appearing into the
middle position and then comes the red box.
Now the last thing left that is the eminent of this tutorial; we will be removing all
these floating conditions.
Here, here, and here.
Now as we have removed all these floating conditions now we are getting back
to our project and reload.
And now we can see that the same display is intact and it
is in action that means all these things are doing well...
In the next tutorial we are going to learn more about this flex box option and how it
is can be used in to your project with some more
details.
Hope that you have liked this tutorial; if you have liked this tutorial
then do not hesitate to hit that red subscribe button.
Hope to see you guys in on next tutorial, till then, bye.

Utilising IoT in Asset Management - Duration: 9:08.Hi!
My name is Timo Ruostila.
I'm the CEO of Trackinno Oy.
With the help of IoT,
we take asset management to the next level in companies.
Most of you probably know what IoT, the Internet of Things, means.
It is not exactly a new thing, since many companies have been working
with IoT, in one way or another, for over 10 years.
But if we, for example, login to Twitter and take a look at what's going on in IoT,
we can see there's still a lot of hype around it.
In this speech I'm going to share some thoughts about what causes the hype
and I'm going to dig into this subject especially from the perspective of asset management.
Nowadays, we can put sensors practically anywhere.
Here is an example of a smart toilet paper holder with a sensor
that sends a tweet to Twitter when it's low on toilet paper.
Brilliant idea.
But if we think about this subject a bit more seriously, the business cases for IoT
are still often limited to tracking and monitoring manufacturing plants,
machines and heavy equipment, and preventing problems related to them.
And this is mainly caused by sensors: the combination of sensors' price, size,
and lifetime has not fallen into place yet,
and thus it hasn't been possible to deploy IoT more extensively.
But this has already changed a lot, and the evolution will keep going in the future.
The technology is developing, network protocols are developing,
the sensors themselves are developing and becoming cheaper and smaller.
New markets are opening all the time, and new business cases related to
smaller equipment, among other things, are emerging.
And this is related to what we do at Trackinno.
So, some think, based on business cases today, that IoT is all about tracking heavier equipment.
However, we at Trackinno mostly talk about managing and tracking smaller items,
i.e. "Internet of Small Things".
Now let's move on to the term "asset management" and what it means.
In our opinion, an asset management system should bring all the assets' information
in one place and make it easily available.
So, asset information, key statistics, documents, maintenance events, usage history,
all this information, notifications and other features, built into one system and made easily manageable.
And what IoT brings to the table is intelligence and automation.
In the future, we are able to track asset location, usage hours, etc., in real-time and then, for example,
send maintenance requests based on this data.
Or we could track how many items we have in a warehouse without taking any separate inventory.
Let's take a short overview of what IoT technologies are popular at the moment.
The most popular technologies at the moment include narrowband network protocols
categorized under the term LPWAN, low power wide area network.
Some examples of these are NB-IoT, SigFox and LoRa,
all of which have their own pros and cons.
NB-IoT might be, based on the public opinion, the dominant technology in the future,
but the network hasn't spread very widely yet.
But all these technologies are based on the idea of sending very small amounts of information
relatively infrequently, which extends the sensor's lifetime already to acceptable lengths.
We still need to bring both the price and size down,
and then we'll be able to create something revolutionary for managing small things.
If you ask me, I think it's only a matter of time when it happens.
Now let's envision a bit more forward what happens when we have sensors
in all of our assets and data is sent to the cloud automatically all the time.
We get to know who is using what and where, in what condition, etc.,
and it's quite easy to start thinking about how to utilize all that data.
We can really begin to think about business cases around the data.
This is also nothing new, and companies have been trying to do it for a long time already.
But in the case of small items, it is revolutionary in that the number of them is huge,
and when we attach sensors to every small item, the number of sensors will be unheard-of.
Then also the amount of data will increase massively, which in turn makes the data more significant.
Take manufacturers, for example. It could be quite interesting for them to know
how and in what kinds of environments their devices and machines are being used
and what problems relate to their usage. The data could be used for product development.
Insurance companies could be interested in this data, too.
They could utilize it for their own uses or offer discounts like "hey, attach these sensors
to your machines and we'll offer a discount on your insurance payments."
Next, let's go through a few cases related to what we have been up to in the IoT space.
Lehtovuori has been our partner for a long time already.
They are bringing a new recycling bin called CitySolar on the market.
It utilizes solar energy, it has a built-in sensor measuring how full the bin is,
and it utilizes it in that it compresses the garbage, which increases the bin's capacity.
In addition, the data is sent to our cloud platform using SigFox.
There, Lehtovuori's customers can track their own CitySolar products on a map view,
check what their statuses are, and receive notifications about where the bins are about to get full.
Here are some other cases. For example, we have piloted a case where we attached
acceleration sensors to cleaning machines. The data is sent to our cloud service via LoRa network
and the data is presented in a visual form in the cloud.
Also, we can get notifications related to usage hours.
In the next case we used GPS to create a geo-fencing solution for the university.
There, a laser cutter in an open laboratory is equipped with GPS, which sends an alarm if the cutter
leaves the university facilities.
Then, Bluetooth Low-Energy is one of the most significant and potential IoT technologies.
We have used it in a prototype, where BLE beacons are attached to assets
and a gateway can tell what assets are inside a warehouse.
That way, we can make inventories automatically, i.e. see what assets are in the warehouse at any given time.
From these examples we can conclude, that our IoT strategy is not to produce sensors ourselves.
Instead, we collaborate with companies that produce sensors and then combine these solutions with our cloud platform.
This way we can provide the end-customers with an overall solution utilizing the newest technologies.
Our goal is to create turnkey solutions, that have previously been luxuries that only large companies can afford,
and make them available also for small and medium-size companies.
But, that's all for now. My name is Timo Ruostila, please come and
have a chat with me if you have any questions or if you got interested in the subject.
Many thanks to the audience.

Review: 4 online backup services keep your data safe - Duration: 12:20.Review: 4 online backup services keep your data safe
In the 15 years that I've been running a small company, I have survived several malware attacks. The only thing that kept me in business was a reliable backup of my data.
When it comes to my data (if not my pants), I'm a belt and suspenders kind of person: In addition to periodically copying my two key work folders onto an external hard drive, my system automatically backs up my computer's contents to an encrypted cloud-based backup service at 1 o'clock every morning.
If I'm attacked or my main computer goes south, I won't lose my company's 40.9GB of data, even if some catastrophe destroys both the computer and the external hard drive.
More than once, I have used the backups to save my digital bacon by retrieving a deleted file, and the online backup has the added convenience of letting me use just about any connected device to access a document and show it to a client during a remote meeting.
I'm not alone in recognizing the benefits of online backup. Phil Goodwin, research director of IDC's Storage Systems and Software group, says, "Many small business owners use consumer backup services to protect their company's data.
It's good protection at a good price, with no hardware required, and has the ability to share saved files wherever you go.".
For this evaluation, I looked at products from four top vendors in the online backup world, according to Goodwin: Mozy, Carbonite, Acronis and IDrive.
I also tested a fifth product, Code42's CrashPlan for Home, but after the review was done and before publication, Code42 announced that it is phasing out CrashPlan for Home and will stop selling that product as of Oct.
We removed that review from the story, but we do provide some details about CrashPlan's surviving small-business product below.
Of the four remaining products, Carbonite offers unlimited storage but restricts the types of files you can back up. Acronis, IDrive and Mozy charge on a per-gigabyte basis but are less restrictive about what you can save.
One thing all of the vendors share is an emphasis on security, with data encrypted both in transit and during storage on their servers.
Acronis goes a step further by using blockchain technologyto make sure that the backup you need to rebuild your system hasn't been tampered with.
To evaluate these online backup services, I timed a series of backups and file restorations using a Windows 10 laptop.
I then timed how long it took to retrieve a file stored in the cloud to an Android tablet and a MacBook Air.
(The Android results are given throughout the story, but Mac results were similar.) See "How I tested" at the end of the story for details. The results were eye-opening. Read on to find out why.
Acronis True Image 2018 Premium. Acronis True Image 2018 offers fast backups and extras such as top security and the innovative integration of the blockchain technology used by the bitcoin cryptocurrency.
Acronis offers a 30-day free trial. There are two subscription online backup services, Advanced and Premium, either of which you can purchase for one, three or five computers.
(There's also a Standard option that doesn't include online backup and has no annual fees.) The Advanced edition includes backup and recovery, disk cloning, mobile device backup, social media backup and cloud storage of up to 250GB for $50 per year.
[ To comment on this story, visit Computerworlds Facebook page. The Premium edition, which I reviewed, adds electronic signatures for documents and Blockchain verification that the archives haven't been altered. It comes with 1TB of online storage and costs $100 per year.
At 498MB, the Acronis app is the largest of the group to install by a wide margin, but it is also the deepest, with a slew of utilities. It took three minutes to download and install it.
The Acronis interface is clean and uncluttered.
The column on the left provides quick navigation to functions such as backup, archive and sync, as well as to a dashboard that provides access to backups of your computer, your phone and tablet, and your Facebook material.
The backup screen shows the file flow from local system to cloud, including a progress bar. It has convenient "Back up now" and "Recover files" buttons.
True Image can run a full backup, or you can choose to exclude some file types from the backup process.
Brian Nadel / IDG The Acronis dashboard showing a backup in progress. The clean portal design includes succinct navigation on the left. (Click on any image in this story to enlarge it.).
Backups can be scheduled at daily, weekly or monthly intervals, or Acronis can continuously back up files as they're saved. It can also be set up to automatically perform a full backup after a restart or shutdown.
You can also set up True Image to do backups only when your system is idle, choosing between optimal and maximum speeds.
Overall, I found that the True Image 2018 interface provided the best balance between getting a good overview and getting things done.
It's easy to find what you need, and at any time you can dig deeply to change what is being backed up and whether it's being saved locally or online.
On the downside, you can't just drag and drop files or folders that you want to back up, but instead must select them from a Windows Explorer-like interface.
One thing that distinguishes Acronis from its peers is its use of blockchain technology as part of its Notary feature, which helps determine whether someone has altered your online archives.
Notary issues a certificate attesting to a file's authenticity from Ethereum Foundation, a major blockchain developer. Besides Notary, True Image offers what it calls Active Protection, which senses when files are being systematically altered.
It calls this "ransomware protection," and here is the logic behind that: Security experts widely tout consistent and frequent backups as the best way to avoid paying ransoms to unlock maliciously encrypted files, but cybercriminals can short-circuit that protection by messing with your archived files as well as those on local systems.
When True Image detects behavior that doesn't match what it has learned about how you interact with your archived files, it stops the activity and restores your backup files. It can be set to automatically restore the original file.
Besides the online backup, you can have True Image archive files locally on an external drive, but Acronis will neither send you a drive with your files (as Carbonite does) nor allow an initial hard drive upload (as IDrive does).
The True Image app is available for Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, but you don't have to use the app to retrieve files; most web browsers, including Chrome, Internet Explorer, Edge and Firefox will work.
On top of backup, Acronis provides a wide variety of utilities, such as system and drive cleanup apps.
The software provides the means to easily clone a hard drive or set up a protected partition on an external hard drive for local backups.
True Image 2018 is for those in a hurry. At 2 hours, 49 minutes and 11 seconds, it did the fastest initial backup — one-fifth the time of the Mozy backup. Its 4.13MBps throughput was the best of the bunch.
The service took 41.2 seconds to perform an incremental update, which was slightly slower than Carbonite's 30.8 seconds, but it was essentially tied for fastest at restoring a 130KB image file, taking 8.1 seconds to Mozy's 8.2 seconds.
And the service took only 5.1 seconds to transfer that same 130KB image file from the cloud storage to my Android tablet, the fastest of the lot.
At $100 for a year's worth of 1TB of storage space, Acronis True Image 2018 Premium is a great value.
Besides storing all your files, it protects against ransomware intrusion and uses blockchain technology to prove that the backups haven't been tampered with. For Acronis, security is a true differentiator. No other backup service provides more peace of mind for the money.
Unlimited cloud storage! Those are seductive words for anyone shopping for an online backup service, and it's the promise of Carbonite Personal.
One-year subscriptions are $150 for the Prime service, $75 for the Plus service and $60 for Basic, and Carbonite offers a 15-day free trial. Subscriptions cover one machine, whether it's macOS or Windows.
(If you want to back up a machine running Windows Server, you'll need one of the pricier Carbonite Office plans, which cover an unlimited number of computers.).
File retrieval isn't restricted to one machine, though. In fact, Carbonite has mobile apps for Android and iOS devices, and you can also use a web browser to grab any saved file.
What's more, Carbonite offers a backup of your backup. If for some reason you can't rebuild your data from the online repository, Carbonite's Courier Recovery Service will ship you a USB hard drive containing every backed-up file.
For Carbonite Prime customers, this service costs $10 per use, including shipping, but the company charges $130 if you don't return the drive.
(The charge is $100 for Basic and Plus customers, so one use would double a Plus customer's annual backup costs — and more than triple them if you don't return that drive.) For Prime customers, it's a bargain compared to Mozy's similar feature.
Brian Nadel / IDG Carbonite's desktop file recovery interface lets you browse or search to find the files you want to recover. The 15.9MB program takes about three minutes to get and install.
Once the software is installed, you can take a tour of its features, and you will be asked whether you want to store the 256-bit AES encryption key yourself or have Carbonite manage it for you.
Keep this in mind, though: If you choose to hold your encryption key, you can't use the mobile apps to view files.
Carbonite's unlimited storage might lose some of its luster in your eyes when you see the types of files and folders it won't back up, at least not automatically.
Several file types (those larger than 4GB, for example, or those outside of Windows C:\Users locations, or Mac Mail and Calendar files) won't be backed up automatically but can be included if you manually select each one.
Besides that, Carbonite has long lists of file types specific to Windows and macOS that it won't back up at all. In addition, the company holds deleted files for only 30 days and it's a single-use license.
My favorite feature of Carbonite is that you can use Windows Explorer (a.k.a. File Explorer) to see which files have been backed up.
Carbonite adds colored dots next to an item to show whether it has been backed up or is awaiting action; a half-filled dot next to a folder means that only some of the files it contains have been designated for backup.
Carbonite's half-size screen can't be resized or moved. You can use the app to schedule backups or choose to continuously back up files, set up a nightly archive and pause the backup process.
Its array of customization options pales in comparison to those offered by Acronis. During backups and recoveries, Carbonite stopped dead in the digital water a few times.
Its initial backup of 37.8GB took 5 hours, 13 minutes and 6 seconds, more than two hours longer than Acronis's initial archiving, with throughput of 201MBps — half that of Acronis.
Its 30.8-second incremental update of 86MB was the fastest of the five. The service replaced a deleted file in 13.3 seconds for middle-of-the-pack performance, and it came in last when grabbing an online file from my Android tablet, at 18.6 seconds.
At $150 per year for the Prime service, Carbonite is expensive compared to Acronis and IDrive — unless your single computer holds more than 1TB of data to be backed up.
The local mirroring and hard drive delivery service are nice contingencies, but if you're comfortable with strictly online backup (or are willing to do your own backing up to an external hard drive), the Basic and Plus plans could be good, cheaper options.
Carbonite is a good option when you have one computer with a lot of data you can't afford to lose.
