N. Korea making significant advancements in ICBM technology: experts - Duration: 1:55.
We begin with South Korea's analysis of North Korea's rocket engine test on Sunday...
The South Korean military says the test demonstrates "meaningful progress" in North Korea's rocket
engine technology.
But officials also noted the North has yet to secure the most complex step needed for
a fully operational long-range missile.
Our Kim Hyun-bin explains.
Following North Korea's new high-thrust rocket engine test on Sunday,... it's widely believed
the North has mastered many core technologies,... including rocket engine propulsion and missile
separation.
"North Korea appears to have tested one main and four sub-engines that are connected to
make a new rocket engine.
We believe North Korea has made some progress in terms of its engine capabilities."

However,... military experts believe Pyongyang has not yet secured the most complex step:
missile re-entry technology.
Such technology allows an ICBM to successfully reenter the earth's atmosphere with no damage
to the warhead.
An ICBM with a range of one thousand kilometers re-enters the atmosphere at a average speed
of 24 MACH -- or some 30-thousand kilometers an hour -- and the warhead has to endure temperatures
of more than seven thousand degrees Celsius.
While this hole in the North's technical ability buys the U.S. and its allies some time,...
experts agree the regime will eventually acquire the re-entry technology and have a deliverable
ICBM within five years.
Once the technology is mastered,... a North Korean ICBM could target the west coast of
the mainland United States.
U.S. officials have said that,... as Pyongyang gets closer to having a deliverable nuclear
weapon, Washington should be ready to take pre-emptive measures.
North Korea has conducted six ICBM tests since 1998,... accumulating a high degree of knowhow
and technology over the years.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson wrapped up his Asia trip over the weekend, visiting
Japan, South Korea and China.
North Korea was high on the agenda, but despite what many expected,… little was unveiled
about the Trump administration's "new approach" to dealing with North Korea.

Three countries in five days.
It's been a long and busy weekend for the U.S. Secretary of State, who began his new
job just two weeks ago,... and his first trip to Asia was dominated by the tricky subject
of North Korea.
He began his trip in Tokyo, where he made the surprising declaration that the previous
20 years of efforts to denuclearize Pyongyang had failed... and that a "new approach" was
needed.
"In the face of this ever-escalating threat, it is clear that a different approach is required.
Part of the purpose of my visit to the region is to exchange views on a new approach."
What that new approach would be was the subject of much speculation as he made his way to
Seoul, where he announced that the U.S. policy of strategic patience was over... and that
even military action was possible if North Korea escalated their nuclear threat level.
That threw even more attention to the final and perhaps trickiest leg of his trip -- China,
North Korea's greatest ally -- and the looming question was whether Beijing would be open
to the U.S.'s new approach.
The trip was complicated by a tweet by U.S. President Donald Trump, hours before Tillerson
was due to arrive in Beijing, which said that China had done little to help in curbing Pyongyang's
actions.
Despite this, the meetings in Beijing seemed to have concluded amicably, but China seemed
to push only one approach to North Korea.
"China has stressed or reiterated in clear terms that the parties concerned should resume
dialogues and negotiations.
It is the obligation of all the relevant parties to carry out the sanctions, and it is also
their responsibility to restart the dialogue."
So where does this leave the new approach?
Despite Tillerson's early pronouncement in Tokyo, very little detail was given on what
was discussed among the leaders and what actions the U.S. plans to take.
Some observers have expressed disappointment about the lack of an outcome, while others
note its still early in the Trump administration and that the purpose of the trip was to test
the waters in the region.
All eyes will now be on the planned U.S.-China summit next month, where Donald Trump is slated
to host Xi Jinping at his exclusive Mar-a-Lago resort.
