Youtube daily report Jan 13 2017

This is a tuberculosis ward,

and at the time this picture was taken in the late 1800s,

one in seven of all people

died from tuberculosis.

We had no idea what was causing this disease.

The hypothesis was actually

it was your constitution that made you susceptible.

And it was a highly romanticized disease.

It was also called consumption,

and it was the disorder of poets

and artists and intellectuals.

And some people actually thought it gave you heightened sensitivity

and conferred creative genius.

By the 1950s,

we instead knew that tuberculosis was caused

by a highly contagious bacterial infection,

which is slightly less romantic,

but that had the upside

of us being able to maybe develop drugs to treat it.

So doctors had discovered a new drug, iproniazid,

that they were optimistic might cure tuberculosis,

and they gave it to patients,

and patients were elated.

They were more social, more energetic.

One medical report actually says they were "dancing in the halls."

And unfortunately,

this was not necessarily because they were getting better.

A lot of them were still dying.

Another medical report describes them as being "inappropriately happy."

And that is how the first antidepressant was discovered.

So accidental discovery is not uncommon in science,

but it requires more than just a happy accident.

You have to be able to recognize it for discovery to occur.

As a neuroscientist, I'm going to talk to you a little bit

about my firsthand experience

with whatever you want to call the opposite of dumb luck --

let's call it smart luck.

But first, a bit more background.

Thankfully, since the 1950s,

we've developed some other drugs and we can actually now cure tuberculosis.

And at least in the United States, though not necessarily in other countries,

we have closed our sanitoriums

and probably most of you are not too worried about TB.

But a lot of what was true in the early 1900s

about infectious disease,

we can say now about psychiatric disorders.

We are in the middle of an epidemic of mood disorders

like depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD.

One in four of all adults in the United States

suffers from mental illness,

which means that if you haven't experienced it personally

or someone in your family hasn't,

it's still very likely that someone you know has,

though they may not talk about it.

Depression has actually now surpassed

HIV/AIDS, malaria, diabetes and war

as the leading cause of disability worldwide.

And also, like tuberculosis in the 1950s,

we don't know what causes it.

Once it's developed, it's chronic,

lasts a lifetime,

and there are no known cures.

The second antidepressant we discovered,

also by accident, in the 1950s,

from an antihistamine that was making people manic,

imipramine.

And in both the case of the tuberculosis ward and the antihistamine,

someone had to be able to recognize

that a drug that was designed to do one thing --

treat tuberculosis or suppress allergies --

could be used to do something very different --

treat depression.

And this sort of repurposing is actually quite challenging.

When doctors first saw this mood-enhancing effect of iproniazid,

they didn't really recognize what they saw.

They were so used to thinking about it

from the framework of being a tuberculosis drug

that they actually just listed it

as a side effect, an adverse side effect.

As you can see here,

a lot of these patients in 1954 are experiencing severe euphoria.

And they were worried that this might somehow interfere

with their recovering from tuberculosis.

So they recommended that iproniazid only be used in cases of extreme TB

and in patients that were highly emotionally stable,

which is of course the exact opposite of how we use it as an antidepressant.

They were so used to looking at it from the perspective of this one disease,

they could not see the larger implications for another disease.

And to be fair, it's not entirely their fault.

Functional fixedness is a bias that affects all of us.

It's a tendency to only be able to think of an object

in terms of its traditional use or function.

And mental set is another thing. Right?

That's sort of this preconceived framework

with which we approach problems.

And that actually makes repurposing pretty hard for all of us,

which is, I guess, why they gave a TV show to the guy who was,

like, really great at repurposing.

(Laughter)

So the effects in both the case of iproniazid and imipramine,

they were so strong --

there was mania, or people dancing in the halls.

It's actually not that surprising they were caught.

But it does make you wonder what else we've missed.

So iproniazid and imipramine,

they're more than just a case study in repurposing.

They have two other things in common that are really important.

One, they have terrible side effects.

That includes liver toxicity,

weight gain of over 50 pounds,

suicidality.

And two, they both increase levels of serotonin,

which is a chemical signal in the brain,

or a neurotransmitter.

And those two things together, right, one or the two,

may not have been that important,

but the two together meant that we had to develop safer drugs,

and that serotonin seemed like a pretty good place to start.

So we developed drugs to more specifically focus on serotonin,

the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, so the SSRIs,

the most famous of which is Prozac.

And that was 30 years ago,

and since then we have mostly just worked on optimizing those drugs.

And the SSRIs, they are better than the drugs that came before them,

but they still have a lot of side effects,

including weight gain, insomnia,

suicidality --

and they take a really long time to work,

something like four to six weeks in a lot of patients.

And that's in the patients where they do work.

There are a lot of patients where these drugs don't work.

And that means now, in 2016,

we still have no cures for any mood disorders,

just drugs that suppress symptoms,

which is kind of the difference between taking a painkiller for an infection

versus an antibiotic.

A painkiller will make you feel better,

but is not going to do anything to treat that underlying disease.

And it was this flexibility in our thinking

that let us recognize that iproniazid and imipramine

could be repurposed in this way,

which led us to the serotonin hypothesis,

which we then, ironically, fixated on.

This is brain signaling, serotonin,

from an SSRI commercial.

In case you're not clear, this is a dramatization.

And in science, we try and remove our bias, right,

by running double-blinded experiments

or being statistically agnostic as to what our results will be.

But bias creeps in more insidiously in what we choose to study

and how we choose to study it.

So we've focused on serotonin now for the past 30 years,

often to the exclusion of other things.

We still have no cures,

and what if serotonin isn't all there is to depression?

What if it's not even the key part of it?

That means no matter how much time

or money or effort we put into it,

it will never lead to a cure.

In the past few years, doctors have discovered

probably what is the first truly new antidepressant since the SSRIs,

Calypsol,

and this drug works very quickly, within a few hours or a day,

and it doesn't work on serotonin.

It works on glutamate, which is another neurotransmitter.

And it's also repurposed.

It was traditionally used as anesthesia in surgery.

But unlike those other drugs,

which were recognized pretty quickly,

it took us 20 years

to realize that Calypsol was an antidepressant,

despite the fact that it's actually a better antidepressant,

probably, than those other drugs.

It's actually probably because of the fact that it's a better antidepressant

that it was harder for us to recognize.

There was no mania to signal its effects.

So in 2013, up at Columbia University,

I was working with my colleague,

Dr. Christine Ann Denny,

and we were studying Calypsol as an antidepressant in mice.

And Calypsol has, like, a really short half-life,

which means it's out of your body within a few hours.

And we were just piloting.

So we would give an injection to mice,

and then we'd wait a week,

and then we'd run another experiment to save money.

And one of the experiments I was running,

we would stress the mice,

and we used that as a model of depression.

And at first it kind of just looked like it didn't really work at all.

So we could have stopped there.

But I have run this model of depression for years,

and the data just looked kind of weird.

It didn't really look right to me.

So I went back,

and we reanalyzed it

based on whether or not they had gotten that one injection of Calypsol

a week beforehand.

And it looked kind of like this.

So if you look at the far left,

if you put a mouse in a new space,

this is the box, it's very exciting,

a mouse will walk around and explore,

and you can see that pink line is actually the measure of them walking.

And we also give it another mouse in a pencil cup

that it can decide to interact with.

This is also a dramatization, in case that's not clear.

And a normal mouse will explore.

It will be social.

Check out what's going on.

If you stress a mouse in this depression model,

which is the middle box,

they aren't social, they don't explore.

They mostly just kind of hide in that back corner, behind a cup.

Yet the mice that had gotten that one injection of Calypsol,

here on your right,

they were exploring, they were social.

They looked like they had never been stressed at all,

which is impossible.

So we could have just stopped there,

but Christine had also used Calypsol before as anesthesia,

and a few years ago she had seen

that it seemed to have some weird effects on cells

and some other behavior

that also seemed to last long after the drug,

maybe a few weeks.

So we were like, OK,

maybe this is not completely impossible,

but we were really skeptical.

So we did what you do in science when you're not sure,

and we ran it again.

And I remember being in the animal room,

moving mice from box to box to test them,

and Christine was actually sitting on the floor with the computer in her lap

so the mice couldn't see her,

and she was analyzing the data in real time.

And I remember us yelling,

which you're not supposed to do in an animal room where you're testing,

because it had worked.

It seemed like these mice were protected against stress,

or they were inappropriately happy, however you want to call it.

And we were really excited.

And then we were really skeptical, because it was too good to be true.

So we ran it again.

And then we ran it again in a PTSD model,

and we ran it again in a physiological model,

where all we did was give stress hormones.

And we had our undergrads run it.

And then we had our collaborators halfway across the world in France run it.

And every time someone ran it, they confirmed the same thing.

It seemed like this one injection of Calypsol

was somehow protecting against stress for weeks.

And we only published this a year ago,

but since then other labs have independently confirmed this effect.

So we don't know what causes depression,

but we do know that stress is the initial trigger

in 80 percent of cases,

and depression and PTSD are different diseases,

but this is something they share in common.

Right? It is traumatic stress

like active combat or natural disasters

or community violence or sexual assault

that causes post-traumatic stress disorder,

and not everyone that is exposed to stress develops a mood disorder.

And this ability to experience stress and be resilient

and bounce back and not develop depression or PTSD

is known as stress resilience,

and it varies between people.

And we have always thought of it as just sort of this passive property.

It's the absence of susceptibility factors

and risk factors for these disorders.

But what if it were active?

Maybe we could enhance it,

sort of akin to putting on armor.

We had accidentally discovered the first resilience-enhancing drug.

And like I said, we only gave a tiny amount of the drug,

and it lasted for weeks,

and that's not like anything you see with antidepressants.

But it is actually kind of similar to what you see in immune vaccines.

So in immune vaccines, you'll get your shots,

and then weeks, months, years later,

when you're actually exposed to bacteria,

it's not the vaccine in your body that protects you.

It's your own immune system

that's developed resistance and resilience to this bacteria that fights it off,

and you actually never get the infection,

which is very different from, say, our treatments. Right?

In that case, you get the infection, you're exposed to the bacteria,

you're sick, and then you take, say, an antibiotic which cures it,

and those drugs are actually working to kill the bacteria.

Or similar to as I said before, with this palliative,

you'll take something that will suppress the symptoms,

but it won't treat the underlying infection,

and you'll only feel better during the time in which you're taking it,

which is why you have to keep taking it.

And in depression and PTSD --

here we have your stress exposure --

we only have palliative care.

Antidepressants only suppress symptoms,

and that is why you basically have to keep taking them

for the life of the disease,

which is often the length of your own life.

So we're calling our resilience-enhancing drugs "paravaccines,"

which means vaccine-like,

because it seems like they might have the potential

to protect against stress

and prevent mice from developing

depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Also, not all antidepressants are also paravaccines.

We tried Prozac as well,

and that had no effect.

So if this were to translate into humans,

we might be able to protect people

who are predictably at risk

against stress-induced disorders like depression and PTSD.

So that's first responders and firefighters,

refugees, prisoners and prison guards,

soldiers, you name it.

And to give you a sense of the scale of these diseases,

in 2010, the global burden of disease

was estimated at 2.5 trillion dollars,

and since they are chronic,

that cost is compounding and is therefore expected to rise

up to six trillion dollars in just the next 15 years.

As I mentioned before,

repurposing can be challenging because of our prior biases.

Calypsol has another name,

ketamine,

which also goes by another name,

Special K,

which is a club drug and drug of abuse.

It's still used across the world as an anesthetic.

It's used in children. We use it on the battlefield.

It's actually the drug of choice in a lot of developing nations,

because it doesn't affect breathing.

It is on the World Health Organization list of most essential medicines.

If we had discovered ketamine as a paravaccine first,

it'd be pretty easy for us to develop it,

but as is, we have to compete with our functional fixedness

and mental set that kind of interfere.

Fortunately, it's not the only compound we have discovered

that has these prophylactic, paravaccine qualities,

but all of the other drugs we've discovered,

or compounds if you will, they're totally new,

they have to go through the entire FDA approval process --

if they make it before they can ever be used in humans.

And that will be years.

So if we wanted something sooner,

ketamine is already FDA-approved.

It's generic, it's available.

We could develop it for a fraction of the price and a fraction of the time.

But actually, beyond functional fixedness and mental set,

there's a real other challenge to repurposing drugs,

which is policy.

There are no incentives in place

once a drug is generic and off patent and no longer exclusive

to encourage pharma companies to develop them,

because they don't make money.

And that's not true for just ketamine. That is true for all drugs.

Regardless, the idea itself is completely novel in psychiatry,

to use drugs to prevent mental illness

as opposed to just treat it.

It is possible that 20, 50, 100 years from now,

we will look back now at depression and PTSD

the way we look back at tuberculosis sanitoriums

as a thing of the past.

This could be the beginning of the end of the mental health epidemic.

But as a great scientist once said,

"Only a fool is sure of anything.

A wise man keeps on guessing."

Thank you, guys.

NASA's Earth Minute: My Name is Aerosol - Duration: 1:44.

This is an aerosol particle.

In real life, you could barely see it.

It's just a little speck suspended in the atmosphere anywhere from a few days to several years.

It could be dust from a desert.

Or salt from ocean spray.

It could have been blasted out of a volcano.

Or created during a forest fire.

It might have flown out of a factory smokestack.

Or a truck's tailpipe.

Depending on what it is—and where it is—

an aerosol particle can do some impressive things.

Like cool the planet by reflecting sunlight back into space.

Or by collecting water vapor to build a cloud.

On the other hand, some aerosol particles trap sunlight and heat the air,

thus preventing clouds from forming.

Other aerosols can host chemical reactions that damage the ozone layer.

And down on Earth, they can even cause health problems, such as lung and heart disease.

That layer of hazy air pollution above big cities?

Yep, it contains aerosol particles.

Aerosols. They're tiny. They're powerful.

NASA studies them with satellites and instruments on the International Space Station

and with specialized aircraft and ground-based devices.

Because when it comes to understanding our environment, our climate, and how it's all changing

little particles make a big difference!

Obama's Family Dog Sunny Bites White House Guest | TMZ Live - Duration: 4:11.

HARVEY: SO THERE WAS A SMALL

INCIDENT, NOT TO THE PERSON WHO

GOT BIT.

THE OBAMA DOG, ONE OF THE OBAMA

DOGS BIT A FAMILY FRIEND AND THE

GIRL HAD TO GET STITCHES AND IS

GOING TO HAVE A SCAR, SO IT'S

NOT LIKE A MINOR THING.

IT HAPPENED ON MONDAY AND SHE IS

A FAMILY FRIEND.

SHE WAS AT THE WHITE HOUSE.

CHARLES: WENT TO GO PET LITTLE

SUNNY WHO IS 4 YEARS OLD AND

SUNNY --

HARVEY: SHE LEANED DOWN TO KIND

OF KISS HIM.

CHARLES: HER, IT'S A GIRL.

HARVEY: TO PAT AND SUNNY BIT

HER FACE.

ANTHONY: APPARENTLY IT WASN'T

TOO, TOO AGGRESSIVE, IT WAS A

NIP AND BIT HER FACE, CUT IT.

IF YOU ARE GOING TO GET BIT

SOMEWHERE BY A DOG, THEY HAVE

THEIR OWN PHYSICIAN THAT TOOK

CARE OF THE DOG, ASSESSED IT AND

DECIDED SHE NEEDED STITCHES.

HARVEY: DID THE DOCTOR AT THE

WHITE HOUSE DO THE STITCHES?

ANTHONY: I WAS TOLD HE DID.

I WAS TOLD THAT HE IS ALSO A

PLASTIC SURGEON.

I DON'T KNOW IF THAT'S TRUE.

HE IS A PLASTIC SURGEON, HE IS

VERY GOOD AT WHAT HE DOES.

HE TOLD THE GIRL SHE IS LIKELY

TO HAVE A SCAR.

SHE WASN'T TOO HAPPY ABOUT THIS.

HARVEY: THE WHITE HOUSE, IT WAS

WEIRD.

THEY ARE NOT COMMENTING AT ALL

ON THIS.

APPARENTLY SUNNY IS -- SUNNY HAS

A REPUTATION.

CHARLES: SUNNY, REMEMBER, IS A

PORTUGUESE WATER DOG.

SHE IS FOUR.

BO IS THE FIRST DOG THEY GOT WHO

ANTHONY: SO CUTE.

HARVEY: SO SWEET.

ANTHONY: SUNNY WANTED SOME

PRESS, MAN, EVERYBODY TALKS

ABOUT BO.

HARVEY: IT'S WEIRD THEY

WOULDN'T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT IT.

CHARLES: THE FACT OF THE MATTER

IS, YES, THE WHITE HOUSE, ONE OF

THE WHITE HOUSE DOGS BIT

WHY NOT JUST OWN UP TO OR TO SAY

WHAT HAPPENED.

I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT'S THE --

WHAT TO DO.

THEY DEFINITELY SAY NOTIFY THEM

RIGHT AWAY.

THERE IS A STATUTE, A RULE IN

HERE THAT THEY REQUIRE YOU TO

KEEP YOUR DOG UNDER QUARANTINE

BY KEEPING HIM OR HER TO YOUR

If At First You Don't Succeed... Green natural Edge Cherry Bowl - Duration: 8:46.

Hi, Alan Stratton, from As Wood Turns (www.AsWoodTurns.com) From this batch of green cherry that I received

recently, I think I'll make a natural edge bowl. This one seems to be a perfect candidate.

It has some good tight bark on this side. There's a little bit a checking here on

this side but I think that will disappear in the bottom. I'll probably not use the

entire depth. It will be more of a shallow natural edge.

Let's see if we can get a good natural edge bowl out of this nice piece of cherry.

Since this will be a natural edge bowl, I'm driving a 2 prong drive center into the approximate

center of the bark side of the cherry log with a wooden mallet. The prongs are aligned

with the grain A hammer would tend to mushroom out the end of the center. I could nip off

the corners on the band saw but it's almost easier just to trim the corners on the lathe.

Now with the lathe turning just below the vibration point of the lathe. This very slow

at this point because of how irregular the log is. As I do remove wood, I'm turning

up the lathe's speed until I get to a speed that smooths out the gouge cuts. Actually,

this is going easier than I anticipated. After I get the corners off and somewhat cylindrical,

I've turned up the speed. Now my focus is to cut a mounting tenon on the bottom plus

another ridge above the tenon to help my eye see the curve through the foot.

I'm a bit late balancing the bowl but it is not too far off. With the lathe off, I'm

holding a finger on the tool rest where the bark edge hits and comparing this to the other

side for both the upper bark along the end grain and the lower bark edge along the side

grain. Next I'm adjusting the tail stock by about ¼" in this case. Now I need to

true up the bowl again. I'm also doing a little scraping to clean

up the exterior. But instead of sawdust or shavings, I'm getting a sawdust mush with

the bowl as wet as it is. Now to reverse the bowl into a chuck. I'll

start with the tail stock in place but not for long as I need that space to maneuver

my gouge. I'm using my large bowl gouge. I'm alternating between cutting at the wall

and hogging out the wood in the middle. The outer layer of bark is very stringy and is

tending to pull itself off before I can get to it with a gouge. I stopped several times

to use a chisel to trim back the bark. This did not work very well. I lost a lot of the

outer bark layer. I finished up the bottom with a heavy bowl scraper.

You may notice a problem with the upper camera. I'm hollowing the interior. So, why is my

camera lens getting sprayed. Here's a theory. The tubes in the wood are full of water but

the tube walls keep it contained. Since the tube extends to both sides of the bowl, the

force of the centrifugal force keeps it balanced and only a little is released. Now that I'm

cutting apart the tubes while hollowing, I'm also cutting the column of water in the tube.

Thus allowing the water in both end grain walls to escape. Enough makes it to the camera

to be a problem. What do you think? Just a note about my sander. I've often

used my electric drill for sanding. But I actually prefer this air powered angle sanding

unit. This is a Grex unit but the main things to look for are: it is angle driven; and it

is smaller and lighter than an electric drill. The advantage is that you can get into the

sides to sand the sides of the bowl without it hitting the opposite side of the bowl.

And, it is lighter and a lot easier to control than a big drill. So I like this sander. The

only downside is that it takes a lot of air flow to drive it. A small compressor will

not work. It has to be one that can really deliver the air flow to drive this sander

unit. But, for me, it is worth it. Now to address the foot. I've measured the

bowl's wall and compared it to the wood at the foot. I have plenty of wood to remove.

I've mounted a rounded block of wood to the headstock. Then put a piece of sanding

pad between the bowl and the wood. The tailstock provides the clamping pressure. Then form

the foot and finish sand the bottom except for a small spigot that I have to leave for

tailstock pressure. When finished, I broke off the spigot and

sanded the middle of the foot at a drill press. Then signed the bowl with a wood burner before

applying walnut oil to the bowl. As they say, if you fall off a bike, get right

back up and start riding again. If you blow up a natural edge bowl, get right back up

to the lathe and turn another one. So, here is the successor to that natural

edge bowl, just a trifle smaller. But, a very nice bowl. A couple of differences with this

bowl as opposed to the earlier one. I waited two days after turning the earlier one before

I actually sanded it. I think that gave me more of the ability to sand it without the

sand paper loading up. If you recall with this one I made just a few weeks ago, I sanded

it right when I finished turning it with my tools. The problem then was that it loaded

up the sand paper with the fresh wet wood. It was a real pain to sand. To finish that

story, this one now, it has warped. It has some significant distortion from side to side.

But it is still pretty and well worth turning green to see what happens and to have that

sort of bowl. So that is that one. It does have a little bit of a crack at that knot

that was in the center. But I think that is just adding interest at this point.

Going back to this one, this will still warp because it has a lot more drying to go. But

it is smooth and finished at this point. I did lose a little bit of the outer edge of

the cherry bark. I think that layer was very stringy and very tough to try to keep. This

is a keeper for me. I like it. I'll continue to turn natural edge bowls even out of cherry.

We'll see you again next week for another woodturning video. Please give this video

a thumbs up, subscribe and tell your friends. Always wear your full face shield –goggles

are not enough protection. Until next week, this is Alan Stratton from As Wood Turns dot

com. Let's keep on turning.

Race Amity is the key to the future of this country - Duration: 8:31.

The reason we focus on race amity is

that friendship is such a powerful

powerful source of engaging with others

and to bring about change.

- Race amity, combined with education

is the key to the future of this country.

- And it's so simple, it's totally overlooked.

We forge ahead saying "Well... we've got to get people to do this

we've gotta make them do that."

And friendship ultimately gets to the heart and that's

really the transformative, lasting impact.

- Our mission is to advance discourse on

race and to promote it through creating

friendships and friendship opportunities.

We have a range of participants from

high school students to world-renowned

scholars and professors who come and speak

and we create these relationships

these human relationships.

- And I love this conference because it always

reminds me of the goodness of people.

Just the amount of eagerness to be one human family.

- The phrase "oneness of humanity" keeps getting used

and that's at least from my experience,

that's typically a phrase that's used by Bahá'ís.

The more conversations I have, the more people i don't know if

they're Bahá'ís or not, which for me is very

affirming. It's affirming of the

mission of the Bahá'í faith because

this is the right time. People are

teeming with the feelings of unity and

oneness and they're looking for whatever

outlet or space they can find to express it

and that we're not alone on that pathway.

- Please welcome Governor William Winter.

- I don't know how this old governor of what at one time

probably could be called the most

segregated, racist state in the nation

could be standing here with these true heroes.

But let us not rest on our laurels.

Let us not be assured that we are always

going to move in the right direction.

We will move in the right direction only as

enough of us insist that we not slip back.

And there are forces of division

abroad in the country today

that would push us back

and we must not let that happen.

- What are the critical factors

for advancing cross-racial

cross-cultural understanding?

- I work in public radio. I've always felt like

I need to make sure that I understand and

sit down next to people who are

different from me. I grew up that way.

My parents are like that. I came up and I

was a Medal of Honor Award winner last year

and I remember walking away feeling

like "I need to come back."

This is awesome! This is exactly

the way I think. There are like a hundred

other people who are the same way.

It's very gratifying.

- You know I used to think that race and racism belong

to black and brown people and that as a white person

that my only role in healing racism

could be to be friendly or to help

and fix people who in fact I had been taught

to see is broken or less than.

And so "Waking up White" to me means

waking up to see that I am right smack

in the middle of the story of

United States racism and my job is to come in

and say "Being a good person isn't

necessarily enough." Like we really do

need to kind of dig into this tragic

history in order to face it, work through it

and move beyond it.

- We have to know each other. We have to

learn to live with each other. We have to

respect each other. We have to recognize

our differences, but respect those

differences - understand that we don't all

have to come from the same cultural

background or the same ideological

background but we become from the same

background of being a human being.

We're all members of one race.

We're members of the human race.

- In this work I've had the opportunity to

establish relationships with like-minded people

across a number of segments of

our society - governmental, religious,

civic leaders, educators.

This has been an extraordinary opportunity for me to

engage in my passion which is steeped in

the founding principle of the Bahá'í Faith

which is the unity and oneness of humankind.

And the theme is centered on

the idea of amity, of friendship and of

course this is not an original thought

of mine. It is motivated by Abdu'l-Bahá

and his visit to America and his

instructions and encouragement to the

American Bahá'í community to promote

cross-racial friendships. To promote race amity Amity

and in fact he instructed a couple

of Bahá'ís to organize the first national

Race Amity Conference in 1921 which we

used to model of course the conference

that we hold here in the 21st century.

The idea though of the center was to

impact the public discourse on race.

To impact in a way that framed it in a

different context. To frame in the

context of human relationships.

To imbue it with a spiritual background in terms

of engagement and relationships among people.

- I think it is a key to our ability to

exist as a great nation

where people to understand the diversity of their

background and their race but at the same

time the commonality of their interests,

the absolute necessity of learning to

respect each other and to know that out

of that understanding will come a

relationship, a total human

relationship that will put down so many

of the biases and prejudices that we're

still afflicted with.

This country is to rich, his too many great resources

too many great people to be handicapped

by a continued racial bias.

- Amity denotes a relationship and unless

we have a relationship, it's hard for us

to engage successfully with one another

and to bring about change.

NASA's Earth Minute: Why Does NASA Study Earth? - Duration: 1:53.

When you think of NASA, you probably think of astronauts, satellites,

Mars rovers, and telescopes that study distant planets and far off galaxies.

So why does NASA, as a space agency, study Earth?

Because it's a planet too.

And there are a lot of advantages to monitoring the only home we currently have…

… from space.

Just three years after the space age began,

NASA launched the first satellite to monitor Earth's weather.

It was the beginning of a revolution in weather forecasting

and laid the foundation for the global study of Earth.

Today, NASA's fleet of Earth-observing satellites

is essential to helping us understand how our planet works.

We're trying to answer some very big questions:

How is Earth changing?

What's causing these changes?

And what does the future hold?

The answers are critical to human life and civilization as we know it.

Adding to what we learn from satellites,

NASA also makes regional observations from airplanes and ships.

Our scientists collect even more data on the ground…

And others use computers to model what's happening now and in the future

with the land, ocean and atmosphere.

All together it's called Earth System Science

and NASA is a global leader in the field.

Best of all, NASA shares what it learns with researchers and agencies throughout the world.

Because when it comes to understanding Earth,

space is the place to really know a planet.

And that's exactly where NASA is.

Statue Awards - Vote Shiryu - Duration: 6:10.

Shiryu is in the final of the Statue forum Awards, so in your opinion,

why is it the best statue of 2016 and what does this statue represent for you?

For me, Shiryu was the first statue I worked on with Muhammet.

It allowed me to learn some new technic skills on 3D printing

and when I see the final rending, I really think Shiryu deserves to win the final.

Shiryu...that's Shiryu, the knight of the Dragon, not your average joe.

The figure in itself is Shiryu giving it all, not one, two, or three.

It's 12 dragons he's sending!

There is everything, the transparence, the dragons, the ground breaking up,

Shiryu giving it all, there is everything. He deserves to win.

When I was young, I really liked Saint Seiya

like many of you

and I especially liked the knight of the Dragon

because I was born in 1977 and being from the beginning that year,

I am still of the sign of the Dragon, so I kind of identified myself.

Why is it the figure of 2016?

Well, I'd say among all the figures of this contest

it is the only one from the Japanime world, so it does deserve that place.

Shiryu for me is the best childhood memory I have from Saint Seiya

because he's my favorite character

The episode where he pierces his eyes in order to fight Medusa was really incredible.

And in the school yard, it was the character I used to simulate fights.

So when I was able to work on that project, it was awesome.

For me it is the ultimate piece because we were able to get all the elements of his dragons attack

and moreover, as I like cold colors, those are the colors I like best.

Shiryu was one of the first figure I discovered when I arrived at Tsume

and I was really impressed by the dynamic of the statue.

The coloring is really beautiful.

It is a figure that really gives out a feeling.

For this reason I think she deserve the title of best figure

and I hope you will share my opinion, and that you will vote for it.

Shiryu for me was a technical and artistic choc

when I came to the Tsume Fan Days 2 while I was still not part of the Tsume team,

so it marked me a lot as a fan

for me it really is the figure of 2016.

We have seen all my colleague and I am now going to answer my own question.

For me Shiryu is a figure with a lot of feelings

it is an important passage in the anime

as it is when he protects the passage in the walls of lamentation to allow Seiya, (Shun) and Hyoga to go and save Athena.

It is a very powerful moment when he reuses the main attack of his master

so to be able to see this attack with the 100 dragons behinds him

well there are 12 here, but that's already a lot

The strength of the dragons and the power of the attack.

It is a very intense statue.

It talks to the heart of people

and in 2016 I rarely had as much emotion

while watching a figure.

It is the one I will vote for

and I hope you will also do it and that you like it as much as I do.

Shiryu for me represent a lot of things,

Particularly the changing and evolution

At the time, we worked on Saint Seiya

in a very static way

and with Shiryu, we decided to go with something dynamic.

On those knights, it is something very difficult to represent

because the armors are rigid and souple at the same time so there was a big artistic challenge.

Regarding the dragons I was able to put in 12 of them

of course there should be 100

but we tried to have as much as possible

while keeping a different dynamic for each dragon

Each head is different

but from a technical point of view, we repeated some elements

to have an affordable figure

It could have been much more expensive

but in terms of engeneering it was a very complex statue

In the end we turned out to have 260 elements in total

which made quite a puzzle to manufacture in the factory.

So for me Shiryu represent a big step for Tsume

from an artistic and technical point of view

Therefore I think she deserves to win the title of best statue of 2016.

Hello everyone. To start with I wanted to thank you to have voted for Shiryu.

We are lucky to be in the final

So we are now facing a fierce competitor

really really skilled,

but I still think we have a chance to win.

The reasons are simple.

Shiryu represents a lot for all of us.

It is not only a statue,

it is also a team work.

I think the team explained you why Shiryu deserved to win,

so whatever the result is, we are really happy to have reached this stage of the competition

and I hope you will be many to vote for Shiryu

and that you will do the maximum for us

so we can win this first place all together. Bye bye.

Our opponent is strong.

Burn your cosmos

and all together,

let's reach the 7th sens.

Thank you for your support

and allowing us to make our dreams come true.

M1A2 Abrams - United States Main Battle Tank [Review] - Duration: 3:57.

The M1A2 Abrams main battle tank is a further development of the M1A1.

Currently it is one of the best MBTs in the world.

Development of improved M1A1 began in 1988.

About 1 200-1 500 M1A2 main battle tanks were delivered to the US army.

Out of this number approximately 1 000 out-dated M1 main battle tanks were upgraded to the

M1A2 standard.

It is planned that this tank will remain in service beyond 2050.

The M1A2 has been exported to Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

The Abrams is protected by Chobham composite armor.

Protection of the M1A2 was improved by using depleted uranium mesh at the front of the

hull and turret.

It offers significant protection against all known anti-tank weapons, however overall weight

increased comparing with the M1A1.

Protection of the M1A2 Abrams is considered as one of the best in the world.

All active service M1A1 tanks have been retrofitted with depleted uranium armor.

M1A2 tanks supplied to Kuwait and possibly Saudi Arabia have downgraded armor without

depleted uranium layers.

Ammunition for the main gun is stored in the turret bustle, fitted with blow-out panels.

Interior is lined with Kevlar liner for protection against spalling.

The M1A2 Abrams can be fitted with explosive reactive armor blocks.

Some M1A2 tanks are equipped with missile countermeasure devices, intended to detect

and jam guidance of the laser-guided missiles.

Vehicle is armed with the M256 120-mm smoothbore gun, originally developed by Rheinmetall and

manufactured under license in USA.

This gun is loaded manually.

The M1A2 has an improved fire control system and its components.

Range of effective fire in excess of 4 km.

The M1A2 has a target acquisition system with hunter-killer capability.

Many tanks produced in the early 90s lack this capability.

Secondary armament consists of coaxial 7.62-mm machine gun, another 7.62-mm MG mounted over

the gunner's hatch and 12.7-mm MG mounted over commander's hatch.

Vehicle has a crew of four, including commander, gunner, loader and driver.

The M1A2 Abrams is powered by Honeywell AGT1500 multi-fuel gas turbine engine, developing

1 500 horsepower.

This engine can run on any grade of petrol, diesel, kerosene, or jet fuel.

Its main drawback is a high fuel consumption and troublesome maintenance.

Engine can be replaced in field conditions within 30 minutes.

This main battle tank can be airlifted by a C-5 Galaxy or C-17 Globemaster III military

transport aircraft.
