Favori Ürünlerimle Sohbetli Makyaj | Hayatımda Neler Oluyor? | İlayda Akdoğan - Duration: 21:55.

Hey everyone!

Today we will chat a little bit with you guys about my life and Youtube journey while I put on some makeup with my favorite products.

I will be showing the makeup products that I usually use and I will also mention

what's going on and what has happened in my life while I put on my makeup.

Since the makeup procedure will take some time, let's jump right into it.

I will begin with moisturizing my lips. I actually have lots of favorable lip balms but

I will use L'occitane's Ultra Rich lip balm which I always carry in my makeup bag.

It leaves a thin layer on the lips. That layer gets soaked up and cleanses the dry skin until you move on to the lipstick.

However, if I want to apply peeling in order to get rid of the scabs on my lips, then I use Dior's Lip Sugar.

I had already made a video about this, you can watch it by clicking up here. It's my updated skin care routine video.

Let's begin with the face, as I always do. I will quickly apply a primer. I'm using Guerlaine's very cute cotton-like base.

It smells awesome and looks awesome on your face, that's why I have been using this quite often lately.

One and a half pump is enough for me. Oh my God, it's spilling, I hope I won't spill it on the couch.

Don't worry mom, I didn't spill it on the couch.

Alright, 2019 has been intense, fortunately.

Even though I can't give all the details, we have started to make a new film.

Actually, we haven't started to record it, we're still in the preparation process. We're practicing almost every single day.

So we're slowly getting ready for it.

That's why I won't tell you guys in great detail

but I can say that, let me move on my foundation while I say it.

I chose my all-time favorite Bobbi Brown's Skin Foundation.

Let me check its number real quick because you guys always ask it in the comments and I can't respond to everyone.Porcelain, zero porcelain.

Whatever, I can't give too much detail because

I'm not allowed to give information about everything but you guys will already be seeing everything here on my channel.

I'm actually quite excited because it will be a period in which I will be uploading the content that I want to share with you guys the most.

I started this channel just as Dolunay was over and I had a lot to share about my profession.

I couldn't have a deal with a TV series that seemed very exciting to me for a while, there weren't many interesting projects that I had encountered, to be honest.

That's why I decided to wait for the right time and rejected the projects that didn't seem very appealing to me.

I liked this film very much, both its scenario and its director, the team, etc.

So I really like what I'm in at the moment.

That's why I'm sure that I will be eager to share everything about it here on my channel.

However, it will take some time but you guys will be seeing it here with me.

That's why I don't want to spoil everything by telling too early.

It's time for concealer. I will use Dior's Diorskin Forever Underskin concealer.

I like its tone very much. Even though I don't use foundation on a daily basis, I usually use a concealer, especially on the days that I feel the need of

putting on makeup.

Since it has a pinkish tone, so it looks like it isn't there and that's what I like about it the most.

By the way, I watched a movie two days ago, which is a movie that everyone is dying for. I was also dying to watch it.

I love Black Mirror's series and I like all of its episodes in general.

Its name was Bandersnatch, I guess. I can't remember it very well since it was too long.

You're leading the film by making decisions throughout the scenes.

Such as picking the cereal for breakfast or accepting or rejecting a job offer.

So you make the decisions as the viewer. There was a book with a similar logic, you would choose the page number and the story would go on accordingly.

That's why it sounded amazing to me. I read that the movie lasted for 5 to 6 hours if you watched all of it.

However, it is said that it lasts for 1 and a half hours with your decisions in total. I didn't like the film at all.

Excuse dear Black Mirror authorities but I didn't like the film at all.

It felt like I was not making the decisions.

How could I get the wrong answers each and every time? I believe that there shouldn't be a wrong answer, the film should unfold based on my decisions.

It didn't happen like that, the film pushed me to give the answers that was already right.

It restarted each time I made a wrong decision and I was about to throw up after that much rewind.

I was not doing anything.

I'm telling it since it is already shown in the trailer:

The boy is designing a video game, we made him gain 4 stars out of 5 at the ranking but it rewinded anyways.

All endings were bad so it kept rewinding.

That's why I didn't like it at all and it even pissed me off.

I think people are exaggerating it, everyone is like "Wow, it's a masterpiece" etc. but I didn't like it.

By the way, I will move on with my brows since I realized that they look terrible.

You will see how much I love this product because I broke it.

It broke because I have taken it everywhere with me.

I've also been using it for years.

It never finishes.

I mix these two colors up but they never finish.

I just keep using it because it matches my brow color perfectly, especially since it's in eyeshadow form.

I just can't quit. I don't know how I slept last night but

by brows are like Atatürk's brows.

They're really upwards, I usually try quite hard to get them into this position.

Today they are already in the right position for me. I just wish they were bushy.

I just have so many blanks in them.

Whatever, as I said, I didn't like the movie at all. I share almost everything I watch on Instagram

because I made a decision for 2019:

I couldn't watch as many series and films in 2018.

I watched only a few movies; I usually watched the new episodes of the series that I had already been watching.

I watched quite lower than my potential.

That's why I got a little bit mad at myself. For example, I watched a great number of movies in 2017 but the situation was vice versa in 2018, so I don't want it to be

like the same in 2019 and that's why I set a limit to myself that compose of minimum 30 books and 30 movies.

I don't think 30 is not too much when it comes to movies but I know that I will be motivated to watch even more once I finish 30 movies.

So I set my limit to 30.

I actually made a list for myself as we got into 2019

about what I want to accomplish in 2019.

I didn't do it in the previous years but the people who I value suggest that it is an effective way to improve yourself and achieve your goals.

So I said why not and started to make a list of my aims goals.

I will quickly stabilize my brows. This is the world's best brow stabilizer.

I might have tried a billion brow stabilizers. Of course I haven't tried a billion, maybe ten.

This is my favorite among them. This is Max Factor's Natural Brow Styler sculpting gel.

A pretty brow stabilizer.

It's unbelievably good. Your brows will remain the same for the whole day.

I was mentioning my list. I wrote a lot on my list before getting into 2019.

I wrote things like "I want this to happen this year, I will work hard to achieve this, etc."

I made a list composing of 10 to 15 lines.

One of them came true in such a short time, by the way but I may have been sending messages to the universe for like 6 months.

I was searching and working on it and it came true.

It's also a surprise, it's in the process of happening. It has not completely happened since the result is not here but it still counts.

It just got me very surprised that it happened so quickly.

I really wanted it to happen but I wasn't expecting it to happen this early. However, when we take the process into consideration, it has been like 6 months so I'm glad

it happened.

What does this list do? It helps you think about and focus on your aims and goals.

It makes your perception work towards it.

Vision board has been quite popular on Youtube lately, which indicates your aims and goals visually on a panel board. I also find it logical.

I was too lazy to do it, to be honest.

I also changed my smartphone's background to some things which I also want them to happen. Let me apply some contour on my face.

I mix my bronzer and contour together because it looks too sharp when I apply them separately.

My indispensable product here is Smashbox's Step by Step contour palette.

This is what its back looks like and here is its interior. I mix the dark and warm colors here.

By the way, the powder here is good for stabilization, I thought it was too yellow.

That's why I was a little bit biased and didn't try it

but I found out that it was not yellow at all. You can use it if you want.

2018 was a fruitful year in general. Especially with respect to Youtube, it has been the first year of my channel and I have really uploaded a good deal

of videos on my channel.

At the end of the day, when I look back,

especially when I scroll down on my channel from my laptop, I just say "Wow, we really have done uploaded a lot of videos"

That's why I could say that 2018 had been an efficient year but my expectation from 2019 is much more.

I think that I'm more aware of the things I want, I think I'm more specific.

I should also add that I'm a bit impatient. I easily forget that it's just the first month of 2019 and start overthinking about my aims and goals.

but it's only February, we have 11 more months to go.

However, I believe that it will be a better year for me to have a better control over the things happening around me.

It's time for the blusher. I will use Shiseido's Inner Glow Cheek Powder Blush Inner Glow Powder, oh my God, it's too long.

I will just tell its number instead: Floating Rose 3.

It looks amazing on the face and you can increase it layer by layer.

My favorite thing about it is its ability to be increased layer by layer, as I just mentioned.

When you apply a blusher on an area, it really remains there.

That type of a blusher is really not so preferable to me.

It's time for the highlighter.

I mentioned this quite a lot of times but people keep asking me for this highlight on the comments section under some of my photos.

It's Smashbox's Hollywood Highlight stick highlighter.

Even when I don't have anything on my face, I just apply it and spread it around with my fingers.

Let me now mention something which I'm not very sure about.

I want to get a haircut.

However, even though I want to get a hair cut, I think long hair fits me best

but not because I always had long hair.

I just think long hair goes better with me.

However, I think that a new period with my hair needs to begin.

What I mean by a hair cut is getting them quite short, up to my shoulders.

I might need to be gassed up a little bit but not too hard. A soft "Yeah İlayda, you should go for it" would do good enough.

I'm in between getting a haircut or not. I mean, whether it's going to fit me or not.

I'm not afraid of not liking my hair after the cut. If I hate it too much, I would get them attached back

or I would just do a pony tail, I love pony tails.

It's just hard to decide. What do you guys think? Should I get it or not?

It's also the trend nowadays, everyone has short hair.

However, short hair becomes the trend each winter, there isn't much to do about it.

I have finished everything with my face, I'm moving on to the eyes.

What I casually do for my eyes is applying Shiseido's blusher on my eyelids

and heat up that area, then I put on my eyeliner.

I don't apply a base on my eyelids since I won't apply any type of eyeshadow.

I just cover it with my concealer and it is just enough for it.

My brows look really good since they are already lifted by themselves.

I can't open this. Whatever, I will put on my eyeliner instead.

I will try to open it later.

This is my best eyeliner but I forgot to close its lid.

I'm very afraid to find out whether it has dried.

It's an eyeliner from Revolution but I don't know its name since it's not written anywhere. Let me show it to you guys.

It's spilled all around. It has got a very very thin edge.

You usually need to tilt the eyeliner quite much in order to do it properly especially with this type of eyeliners

and they end up not being black enough but it is not the case for this one.

You can easily use the tip of it to make a tail and fill in it and it ends up being extra black.

Everything I just said may seem like a lie since it may be dry. I'm excited.

I can't speak while I put on my eyeliner so I will quickly skip this part.

The only thing I can say is I Iove putting on highlighters.

Oh, it's not dry.

I was afraid for no reason. Why can't I open this?

Thank you. Smashbox's Photoedit Eyeshadow Trio.

Let me see if it has a specific number. Gold. It has three different colors in it.

It contains everything you need. I had done my new year makeup with this.

What I like about this is its glow, I add glow on my eye flares with this but

I get my brush wet before doing it. I just need to find my brush first, here it is.

I get my brush wet because it makes it much better. First you take some on a thin tipped brush. My Aliexpress brushes are not my favorites, but they do okay.

I'm using the lightest color, this one here.

I'm getting it wet with revolution's stabilizer spray.

It shines so beautifully. It doesn't shine this well when you don't get it wet, of course.

All eyeshadows are like this.

Now it's time for the lashes. We have a long process again. I will curve my lashes and then we will move on to the mascara.

I will use Lancome's Grandyoze mascara, please excuse my pronunciation if you know French.

I really can't decide which mascara is my favorite. I've always used Dior's Blackout,

my affordable favorites are Maybelline's Lash Sensation and Revolution's Eye Opening, I guess that was its name.

I will add all the products that I mention in the description box below.

I switch between those two and this one.

This one really makes the lashes black and keeps them up in the air.

It also doesn't agglomerate and get into your eyes, so I love it very much.

We have also finished the eyes and now it's time for the lips.

I'm telling you guys the lipstick that you have asked me on Instagram which I never take off.

Golden Rose's Velvet series, I swear I can't read it because the letters are decayed.

Velvet something series. I can't even see it.

It's number 21 but I do something to make this look even better:

I apply it together with a lip pencil.

I use Deborah's

what's your name?

I don't know its name.

Its number or name is not indicated.

I use Deborah 24 Ore lip pencil. I think 24 Ore is its number.

It's a nude pencil. I draw the frame of my lips with this and fill them in with the lipstick, the result is just amazing.

That's why I always use this. By the way, my lip balm has melted on my lips and its glimmer is left.

It looks really well underneath the lipstick. By the way, I was at Cappadocia like a week ago.

It may be one of my favorite cities in Turkey.

It just has an amazing mystic and different atmosphere.

I think I wouldn't get bored if I went to Cappadocia for 3-4 times a year because it's very beautiful.

I went there in winter for the first time.

It was spring or summer when I first went there. I was young and we used to go there more often. I couldn't perceive its value.

Whatever, I went there for the first time when it was snowy and

it was beautiful in a different way in snow.

The city itself is very beautiful and it looks beautiful.

I want to visit there again when the weather warms up, in spring or summer.

Finally, I will stabilize my makeup. I usually use this to refresh my face if I have applied any foundation.

It's a great stabilizing spray.

I will apply Revolution's Profix spray.

God, I'm excited.

First pump always makes me nervous.

Come on! Oh, something went wrong.

I'm feeling good.

We have finished my makeup. As I said, these are my favorite products.

I've been using some of them for years and some of them for only a few months.

You always like some of the products more than the others, they become your babies.

These are my indispensable products when I wear casual makeup for now. Of course they get updated through time.

When I make a revolutionary change with the products, I will make a new version of this video

but these are my favorites lately.

I will of course add all my favorite products down in the description box.

You can reach them all from there.

It's been a nice chat video in which I mentioned what I have been doing, watching, thinking lately. I think it was cute.

Hopefully, you guys liked it as well.

There's still no precision about the video regularity because I've been really busy lately.

I'm trying to catch up as much as I can. I spoke way too much, this is it for now.

See you guys until another video, bye.

The Tragic Life Of Artie Lange - Duration: 6:15.

Few comedians have had careers as insane and tragic as Artie Lange.

The funny-man has had more than his fair share of struggles, but no matter how dark things

get, Lange always finds a way to come back.

Here's the real story behind the tragic life of Artie Lange.

Right after Artie Lange's 18th birthday, tragedy struck when his father fell off a

ladder at work and was paralyzed.

Lange, who often worked alongside his father and held his ladder, was away playing pool

with friends.

"I have nightmares about that.

He never brought it up to me, but, uh, I…

I think about it all the time."

Lange's father passed four and a half years after the accident, with Lange later revealing

to Rolling Stone that he'd simply "lost the will to live."

After moving to New York and doing stand-up for about three and a half years, the 27-year-old

Lange scored his dream job when he was cast on the brand new Fox sketch show, MADtv.

However, working on the show was stressful, and Lange's growing cocaine problem didn't

exactly help matters.

According to his memoir, Too Fat to Fish, Lange reached a low point when filming a sketch

called "Babe Watch."

A parody of the movie Babe and the hit show Baywatch, Lange had to spend three hours transforming

into a creepily accurate pig-man.

"A pig face, a pig snout.

Six teets.

The bikini top on each one, that was the joke, you know…

You didn't see us at the Emmys a lot back then."

When he finally got to set at 4 a.m. after having to stare at himself in pig makeup for

hours, Lange decided he needed a boost.

After buying snow in a parking lot and doing some lines in a restaurant bathroom while

still wearing his pig mask, Lange returned to set, only to continue doing lines there.

With no end to his addiction in sight, combined with two attempts to take his own life, Lange

was fired from MADtv after only two years.

Needless to say, Lange wasn't getting a ton of offers thrown his way after being fired

from a hit TV show and having a known problem.

"I have no job, no car, no money, no girlfriend.

I'm not particularly good-looking.

When I go to the beach, I don't tan properly."

However, comedian Norm MacDonald was happy to give him a chance by casting him in the

movie Dirty Work.

Lange was in rehab when MacDonald reached out to him about the role, but instead of

completing the program, he simply paid the rehab director to give him written permission

to begin filming.

Lange and MacDonald hadn't met before the film, but they instantly became friends during

Lange's audition.

When MacDonald appeared on Howard Stern in 1998 to promote Dirty Work, he brought Lange

along, talking him up until Stern invited him into the studio.

"Isn't that the guy who got fired from Mad TV?"

"Yeah, man, he got fired from Mad TV.

This is the coolest story."

"What did he…?

Where is he?

Bring him in, too."

It was Lange's first appearance on the show, and it led to the most successful move of

his career.

Lange's easy charm left a lasting impression on Howard Stern after his initial appearance

on the show.

So when Stern needed another person in the studio in 2001, Lange was the first to come

to mind.

The comedian stayed on the show from 2001 to 2009, and Stern praised him as the "funniest,

sweetest" guy around with "the biggest heart on the planet."

While the two loved working together, Lange's problem eventually made the collaboration

impossible.

After falling asleep in the studio and nearly punching his assistant on air, Lange went

back to rehab and appeared in his last show in December 2009.

By 2010, Artie Lange had hit rock bottom.

In his darkest moment after a four-day binge, Lange drank some household chemicals and attempted

to take his own life with a knife.

Lange later explained his addled thought process, saying:

"At the time I did that, there was a part of me that just wanted to get that feeling

or that opiate feeling or whatever.

My logic was, 'If I get bloody, I'll get queasy, and I'll go to sleep.'"

Luckily, his mother found him passed out and bleeding in his bedroom and rushed him to

the hospital.

After a year and eight months in rehab and therapy, Lange started to work again, writing

his second book, Crash and Burn, about the incident and his addiction.

If you or anyone you know is having suicidal thoughts, please call the National Suicide

Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

Though Lange has had more than his fair share of troubles, he always seems to get back on

his feet.

With the help of small roles on Louie and Inside Amy Schumer, Lange slowly made his

way back on TV, all while continuing his standup career on the road.

The game-changer came in 2016 when Lange scored a major role in the HBO series Crashing.

Lange plays himself on the show and acts as a sort-of mentor to Pete Holmes' lead character,

an aspiring stand-up comedian.

After only four episodes, the show got picked up for a second season, upping the chance

of Lange's role becoming significantly larger.

Though he spoke about sobriety after nearly taking his life in 2010 and seemingly got

his career back on track, Artie Lange was arrested in March 2017 for possession.

After the arrest, Lange tweeted to his fans that he was okay and "never wanted to live

more", though he warned young people to not follow in his footsteps.

However, a few days after the incident, Lange surprised fans by saying in a radio interview

that he had been fired from Crashing, but HBO and executive producer Judd Apatow were

quick to shoot down that idea.

The show's creator and star, Pete Holmes, even said:

"Once you meet and know Artie, you're not going to turn your back on him."

It's unclear what caused all the confusion about the supposed firing, but Lange did eventually

return to the series, even starring in a poignant episode that directly addressed his long battle

with addiction.

Unfortunately, the condition of Artie Lange's nose tells his story.

Fans who paid close attention to the comedian's nose in pictures and appearances could watch

the progression through the years, but Lange addressed it head on in December 2018 by posting

several photos to Twitter, captioning one picture of his nose:

"Woke up clean!

My nose is f---ed.

Gotta accept it.

But I'm alive and blessed."

This all comes amid court appearances for continued convictions, as well as reports

that Lange relapsed during rehab in the fall of 2018.

However, Lange insists that he's clean now, even taking to Twitter in December 2018 to

defend his decision to stay busy with stand-up comedy.

Lange wrote:

"I'm clean, guys.

I swear.

Will it last?

I hope so.

But I can't sit inside and be what… people want me to be.

I gotta take the risk.

It's the only life I know.

I love you all."

Make your characters MORE DYNAMIC - Duration: 12:42.

It may be small detail, but the meat of the buttocks coming from behind

Don't forget that

Thank you for coming -Hello from last time

Last time this stick figure became an art like this

So this time is TONY -Scary!

So Hinoe-san, please draw a stick figure.

Ok, I will scrabble something.

Hinoe draws a stick figure

For a stick figure, it's impossible to start from the waist

I will start by selecting the position of the head

Oh no, don't do this to me!

This is quite a challenge

Something like this

Yahoo!

Hold on a second

It looks quite hard, but Tony may be good at this.

-Let me think -I think you'll do good

-I'll think of a theme -Please do

Yahoo!

Perhaps a weid looking guy?

Yes, I thought of that as well

Whice would be good?

What kind of a strange boy would I draw?

Ok, let me try it -Please do

It's a little different from Hinoe's drawing

Tony is starting with the "stick" of the stick figure

Hinoe added the volume first

I guess so

Tony, do you always add the skelton part first?

Yes, always. I need to add some energy to the action line

So rather than a skelton, it's how to create the rhythm of the movement?

Yes, recently I am practicing that.

-Is that to make the drawing dynamic? -Yes yes

It's been quite a while and I'm getting nervous

My hands are....shaking

The muscle -Yes, muscle

Even for a guy who is training his muscles, he may want to shout Yahoo! sometimes.

Double Peace -Double Peace!

Oh no! Ah, he's been drinking too much coffee

That would definitely effect his mentality

Although it's such a strage pose

He's got great body

He must be doing a lot of training

Oh yes

That outfit seems to look familiar

I was thinking of doing a different variation

Put a garter belt on him

Does he have that on?

Did he?

Knee high socks -Knee high! Nice nice

The "abosolute territory" around 3cm on the edge -Ahh, on the tip

I learned that before

We learned that from Uchida -Cyber cyber

How is the hair?

Ah, I got it. What was that Doraemon..

No, Marukochan. The hair is like this.

The adult version.

Was Marukochan's hair like that?

Her friend

Yes, her friend

and inspiration from One Punch Man as well.

You're watching Anime a lot lately. A wide range of taste

Chibi-Marukochan, next is Macross

-Oh yes -You're watching all genres.

-I love all genres -All genre!

-High heels! -Heels! How could he jump with heels?

I'm watching a lot of Americans heels lately,

and they are ALL muscles

But you llike those styles

Recently I've been looking for my style

so I'm trying many styles

It's quite fun. Oh, angel wings are good

I love this character

Let's make this his profile picture for a dating site.

Oh that's nice.

I'm this guy

Please check me out

So, ok

You pencil grip is funny

-You have your thumb in like this -That's true

I think my hand is a bit strange today

Ah, you need some control of yourself?

You want?

Oh no, I don't need coffee

-Ok, done -Oh

-Finished? -A bit more

Finished

-Ok, nicely done -Excuse me

He's jumping.Jumping

Hinoe-san, please draw.

This stick figure. Yahoo!

He's drawing quite fast this time as well.

The outfit is...oh I see

-It's Fundoshi pants -That's nice

I understand the pose, but in what scene is he jumping?

I wonder what it is

Hot springs?

If Fundoshi, it could be a festival

The Fundoshi you put on in a festival is,

without this cloth in front

It's like this from the front

-What a smile -It's Yahoo!

Wig?

Umm...no

You see the hair?

-Yes -It becomes like this

Oh I see

I want to create something like this every day

Not me

Everyone has different taste

Oh really?

It would be funny if this was Anime

LIke a Kool-Aid man?

Oh yeah

Do they still have that commercial, I wonder?

I don't know

He has big body, but quite muscular

Looks strong

Rather than a festival, he has reached paradise

For this...

-You told me last time the waist is important -That's right

Look at the Chinese character for "waist"

It was like that. The waist

This signifies the body

This part signifies the most important part of the body

Which makes "waist"

That is so true

Should I start from the waist?

Yes. a lot of things work when you set the waist

Some details. Don't forget the meat of buttocks which comes from behind

By the way, if you power this up more,

-it will cross like this. -A lot more power

For the outfit, when you draw how the structure is made,

it gives credibility -ok

Whether it looks like a simple boots

or it looks like a long stocking

Very important

For the current pose on the waist, is it dynamic enough?

I think adding more volume to the waist will make it look more dynamic

-The camera has something to do with it? -The camera position

Add some perspective to it,

is one idea.

If you want dynamic, you should spread your arms

I learned a lot

So, what we had learned today is,

A dynamic picture

The frills are important

Can AI help crack the code of fusion power? - Duration: 7:57.

- So this lights gonna go on

and that's gonna light up.

- The anticipation.

- There you go.

Triggering.

- I pushed a button.

- [Intercom] Triggering.

(beeping)

(loud metal popping)

- So what is that sound we just heard?

That's the sound of $150 million plasma collider,

blasting jets of super hot ionized gas

at hundreds of miles per second.

We're at TAE Technologies, a 20 year old start up,

that hopes to finally achieve nuclear fusion.

It's the same energy that fuels the stars

but harnessing it here on earth

has been a scientific dream for decades.

Fusion power plants would mean plenty of energy,

no carbon admissions, little long term radio active mess

and zero chance of a Fukushima-like meltdown.

Governments, universities and private companies

have been pursuing fusion since the 1940s.

We're still nowhere near adding a fusion power plant

to the grid,

but in February 2018, a panel of experts published a list

of game changers for fusion research

and at the top of their list were advanced algorithms

like artificial intelligence and machine learning.

One of the private companies chasing fusion is TAE,

which began collaborating with Google a few years ago.

Together they developed machine learning tools

that TAE thinks could finally bring fusion within reach.

So we headed to a nondescript stretch

of Foothill Ranch, California.

We wanted to see just how far along TAE Technologies is

and where, if anywhere, AI enters the picture.

- So right now we're looking out towards the main vessel,

the experiment.

See all the blue cabinets around,

they are our power supplies.

Primarily for the magnets

which help to control and shape the plasma

that we are heating.

- [Rachel] Our guide is Erik Trask,

a lead scientist at TAE Technologies.

He's taking us on a tour of Norman,

the company's plasma collider.

Inside magnetic fields propel and control

the super hot spinning clouds of ionized gas called plasma.

While particle beams heat it to temperatures hotter

than the sun's core.

- The goal of this machine is to show

that we can heat up our plasma

to high enough temperatures

to show that it is relevant

to make a fusion power plant out of.

- [Rachel] All attempts at fusion involve

smacking lightweight particles

into one another at temperatures hot enough

for the particles to fuse.

That produces a new element plus energy.

In the starts, fusion occurs when hydrogen nuclei fuse

to form helium.

There are a few different ways to try and replicate

this process on earth.

Some experiments control the plasma with magnetic fields

inside a massive metal donut called a tokamak.

TAE twirls the plasma inside a linear machine named Norman.

Sounds great but none of this has produced enough energy

to be useful for a power plant.

(loud metal popping)

A machine in the UK called Jet did set the world record

by generating 16 megawatts of fusion power

but it took 24 megawatts to heat up the plasma

and even more electricity to contain it.

So the whole thing was a net loss of energy.

TAE's Norman machine produces some fusion reactions

but not many according to the CEO Michl Binderbauer.

- So things get hot enough that yes occasionally

a few elements actually collide hard enough

and you get fusion.

And we actually use this for diagnostic purposes.

Now this isn't bulk fusion yet, right.

So this wouldn't be economic.

This makes a handful of events.

But as we go up the scale eventually we'll get there.

- [Rachel] That's the goal for the future,

a fusion reactor that runs for months at a go.

For now, the goal is to produce a plasma

that's 30 million degrees Celsius for 30 milliseconds.

To get there the team fires Norman 50 times in a day

for just milliseconds at a time.

Each shot they may tweak thousands of variables

like the timing, the shape of the magnetic field,

the voltage of different power supplies

or the amount of plasma.

Since the machine came online,

it's fired over 11,000 shots,

each one a bit of a blind stab at the optimal variables.

- And we have a fault on N1N.

Do we know what happened there?

Stopping shot.

- So what happened?

- So there's potentially a resistor that's gone bad

or a board that is reaching an over voltage

and it's tripping something inadvertently.

- [Rachel] It's impossible for a person

to keep all those variable in their head

or to change them one at a time.

That's why the team is collaborating with Google

using a system called the Optometrist Algorithm.

- The advantage of one variable at a time

is you know exactly what happened and why.

Which makes prediction and model building very easy.

You can do that as long as the number of variable you have

is not very large.

How do you do that in four dimensions?

Or 20 dimensions?

- [Rachel] The algorithm is what lets them change scores

of variables in each shot.

If the team thinks the new combination produced

better results than the last one they pick one path

of pre-programmed shots.

If it's worse, they pick another,

hence the name optometrist.

Is shot one or shot two closer to viable fusion?

Three or four?

654 or 655?

According to Erik, what's happening here

is really machine learning rather than AI.

Right now, it's still the humans making the call

about what's better and what's worse.

- We've gone through countless classes

in undergrad and graduate school,

time in the lab, so our knowledge is being used

to produce data.

At some point, an AI system could be used,

could be trained on the knowledge we're gathering.

We're not quite at that stage yet.

- [Rachel] We asked some other fusion researchers

what they thought of TAE's approach, Julian Kates-Harbeck,

who worked with Princeton's physicals laboratory,

and Christina Rea at MIT.

They use machine learning a little differently

but they're intrigued by TAE and the optometrist.

- This algorithm supports human decision making

but doesn't take away the human out of the loop.

So it's sort of this beautiful synergy

between the human and the machine.

- [Rachel] Julian and Christina

have each developed algorithms

to predict when the plasma might misbehave

in order to keep it under control.

The methods differ but Christina says fusion experiments

are just so data heavy

that it's natural for machine learning

to help here and there within reason.

- There are many low hanging fruits in our field

that can really benefit from using this advanced statistics

that lies under the hood of AI in general.

Of course, we are not getting to the point

where we are building a self driving tokamak.

- [Rachel] These teams all see machine learning

and AI the same way,

as important tools just not as a panacea

to all of fusion's problems.

Right now there is no such thing.

The TE team is still thinking in milliseconds

and looking for one good day at a time.

- If we can get there in one day, great.

It probably will take more than one day.

- [Rachel] Is that a good result,

the plasma 20 million degrees for 10 milliseconds?

- That would be terrific, yeah.

Champaign would be flowing by now.

- Hey everyone, this video is actually part

of the Real World AI, a special issue here at The Verge.

This week we're bringing you all sorts of stories

about how AI's being used in the world today.

So if you want more go to The Verge's YouTube channel

PRF Review: Trump wants Puerto Rico to fail - Duration: 11:21.

In today's episode I'll be discussing recent events that highlight how

President Trump not only doesn't care about Puerto Rico's development and

ultimate recovery, he actively opposes it.

My name is Andrew Mercado-Vázquez

you can actually listen to on Patreon, Google Play, iTunes and other platforms.

Now, as I mentioned at the beginning what we're going to be talking about is

recent events that have highlighted how it is that the Trump administration has

become a obstacle in Puerto Rico's development.

Now, the first article we're going to be discussing comes from the Washington Post.

It was published on January 16th and it was written by Tracy Jan, Arelis Hernández,

Josh Dawsey and Damian Paletta.

Now, the title is the following.

Now, you read that title and you think this has nothing to do with Puerto Rico, but it does.

Who is this this top HUD official? It's actually none other than

Deputy Secretary Pan Patenaude. She was second-in-command at

the agency led by Ben Carson and was widely regarded as that agency's most

capable political leader. This is a person that has knowledge about her

agency, knows how this agency works and can speak with authority about about it.

Later down the article they talk about different instances that actually led

this person to depart the administration. But in particular to the

Puerto Rico issue they talked about the following and I'm gonna quote.

Now what is was this "concern" from Trump's part?

The article talks about that as well, I'm gonna quote.

"He" being, of course, Donald Trump.

Essentially what this all means is that Donald Trump was worried. What was he worried about?

That when the money that Congress had appropriated for Puerto Rico would

arrive to Puerto Rico, that government officials and other people, apparently, would misuse it.

Okay. You could say that that concern is valid.

Maybe.

But it becomes baseless once we consider the following, and I'm going to quote again from the article.

That's why it becomes baseless. That's why it can't be

just a "concern" from from President Trump. Because you have a HUD

official - second-in-command, not just anybody - telling you that this agency is able to completely

oversee and make sure that the money is used correctly. You don't even have to

trust the people that are gonna receive the money anymore because

your own administration is gonna be able to oversee it. So it becomes baseless, it

becomes empty. That seems to be just a facade that's constructed because of other motivations.

Now, what would these other motivations be?

That question is addressed in a Vox article that was

actually published the next day, January 17th. It's written by Matthew Yglesias (Yglesias with a Y).

This article is properly titled. It's the following.

THAT'S the right way of describing this particular situation.

The article basically talks about the Washington Post article and provides

the same general information. But towards the end the author does some some

reflecting, and I think this type of thought is very important to

highlight, and I'm gonna quote from the article directly.

So what exactly are we looking at here?

In this first example ,what we're looking at is a President that sees Congress

acting in a way favorable to Puerto Rico...and actively stands in its way.

And let's not forget the history that this administration has and the way that

it behaves towards certain segments of society. This author seems to feed from

that when he highlights the possibility that the President and his

administration is behaving, not from a place of general concern but rather from

a place of bigotry, a place of ignorance, a place of racism, or or both.

That's just the first example. The second example comes a little bit more recently.

Actually I think it was during the same time, more or less.

It's highlighted in an article from a local news outlet called El Nuevo Día.

It's an article titled"Trump attempts to block funds for Puerto Rico again" and it's

written by José A. Delgado Robles. This is an interesting article it's talking

about something new that happened. And I'm gonna go ahead and quote from it.

"Emergency nutrition assistance."

We're talking about money that goes to people so they can feed themselves.

The administration - Trump's administration - is opposing this. Why exactly are they

opposing this? Article talks about that as well, I'm gonna go ahead and quote again.

So, money for people to be able to feed themselves "is unnecessary and excessive."

We need to ask ourselves: would this be the same narrative if we

were talking about people that weren't in Puerto Rico, but some some segments of

society or people that lived within one of the 50 states?

We can ask ourselves that question as we read on. I'm gonna quote again.

There's there's the motive. The Trump administration is using

the $600 million dollars that should be

intended for people in Puerto Rico be able to feed themselves as a

playing chip in this push-and-pull that the administration has. We're gonna

go ahead and read one more time from the article, the following and I quote.

And he's talking about beneficiaries from this

nutritional assistance program. So, we're not talking about people getting rich.

We're not talking about people receiving loads of money. These are people that

just receive what's needed in order to buy what they need to survive, to subsist.

We're talking about a situation where the President of the United States first tries to block

Congress itself in appropriating money for disaster relief for Puerto Rico.

And then that same President comes in

and tries to block any effort in regards to Puerto Rico's ultimate development.

Which includes allowing people to receive a little bit more in order to

buy a little bit more food. Because what they receive currently on average is $135 per month.

And these are people in need.

What are we looking at here? We're looking at a series of current events

that basically highlight what we've always thought here at Puerto Rico Forward

and PRF Review. We're dealing with an administration that looks

at the Puerto Rico issue and not only does it ignore it, not only does it just

set it aside and pretend it doesn't exist like other presidents and other

administrations have done, and other congressional bodies have done - both

Republican and Democrat - but we're also seeing something a little bit more egregious.

We're looking at something different.

This administration is trying to prevent Puerto Rico from getting ahead.

It's trying to prevent Puerto Rico from developing and to ultimately recover from a natural disaster.

And that is...

...that's horrible.

Well that's going to be it for today's episode.

As always, thank you for time, thank you for listening, y que viva Puerto Rico.

How Maggie Rogers Created 'Light On' | Billboard | How It Went Down - Duration: 3:37.

(hands clap)

- Hi, I'm Maggie Rogers and this is How It Went Down

with my song Light On.

I thought my record was done six times.

(laughs)

And I kept going back.

I had this sort of running track list

on a note on my computer.

I went in for one last swing.

So I went in to hang out with my friend Tom,

who also goes by the name Kid Harpoon,

and we just hung out and talked for a while.

He was sort of asking me if there's any stories I had yet

to tell on the record that I wanted to.

I remember specifically playing this bass line

on this Moog synthesizer at the same time as

he was playing this guitar line

but I don't actually know what came first

as far as the melody goes, and lyrics.

I always have this notepad with me.

It's a Moleskin, there's no lines,

so I can sort of scribble as things happen.

I remember scribbling pretty quickly.

The pre-chorus is like:

Oh, I couldn't stop it, tried to slow it all down,

crying in the bathroom, had to figure it out with everyone

around me saying you must be so happy now.

(woman crying)

It's pretty sad.

(laughing)

But I think that was the thing, is that,

I felt pretty overwhelmed and a little scared for a while.

My very private life became very public really quickly.

In a way where I didn't feel like I had any control over it.

The whole song is sort of about feeling out of control.

I guess I kind of didn't really know that

if I was going to do this or not.

Because I never had any doubts about the music

but the reality was that my job as a

professional musician kind of

turned out to be, like, 25% music

and a whole lot of other stuff.

Which makes sense cause it's a job.

You know what, there's always a part of it that has to feel

like work or something that's not entirely you.

I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to make

this all feel like me.

I produced a lot of this record with Greg Kurstin.

I learned so much by getting to watch him work

and work with him.

I'd studied his production in school and then getting to,

sort of like, be a teammate with him

was really exhilarating.

I brought this song to Greg and we added, we changed around

some of the drum parts and added this, like,

really soaring, open guitar on the choruses.

Which I think added just a little bit of texture.

My favorite kind of music is like dancing while crying.

Which is maybe like a weird genre per se.

I like songs that you can have both the physical release

and an emotional release.

When I think about that, I think about the synthesizer

in this song.

Because realistically the song, chord structure wise,

is fairly simple but the one thing that happens

over the course of the whole song is there is this, like,

arpeggiator and the filter opens.

So by the end of the chorus it's just like...

Well maybe that's actually like the best analogy

for how I feel too.

You know like, the filter on this arpeggiator starts closed

and by the end of the song is really open.

And really free and really soaring.

And exciting and hopeful and optimistic.

That's actually a really wonderful parallel

with how I felt about music in the last two years.

Excited, bubbling, kind of timid at the beginning

and then by the end, just like, really happy.

(synthesizer sounds)

And...

(synthesizer sounds)

ready.

(synthesizer sounds)

When they swim to the surface, I like to pull them out.

That means they're full.

How to stabilize a greaseproof paper sewing pattern diy tutorial - Duration: 2:30.

Greetings and welcome to Busy B from Germany. My dear fellow collectors today

our topic is to stabilize a sewing pattern when you use grease proof paper for your

design. I prefer to use grease proof paper when I'm making a pattern from a

real Mattel dress. You see my design in the background. I already did the sketch

a while ago and recently I wanted to use this dress again and found it a bit hard

to do my transfer to fabric somehow. I thought it would be a good idea to

stabilize it and make it for the next transfer easier. What do you need for the

stabilization? Paper, normal paper like you use it for printing, glue and some

patience. You first put the glue on the back of the greaseproof paper then you

put it on the normal paper and let it dry for a while. I use a glue stick for

my swing pattern because I think it's easier instead of using liquid glue. I use

liquid glue for checking the seams. It's not 100% possible to reach the finest

edges of the pattern but that's no problem use liquid glue when the glue

stick is dried to be sure every detail of the pattern is glued onto the paper.

Then the next transfer from paper to fabric should not cause any problems

anymore. Thanks for watching. Every Friday comes a new exciting video for you

please don't forget to subscribe to my channel and I'm always open for donations.

Thanks !!!!

BEHIND THE SCENES with Konrad Junghänel and Stefan Herheim | XERXES Handel - Deutsche Oper am Rhein - Duration: 8:19.

For over 30 years the form called opera seria had been dominant in London.

It consists of long arias, during which the story stands still and then recitatives

in which the narrative moves forward.

This form was quite rigid and it had no chance of surviving in England.

The audience were a bit fed up with it.

Of course Handel noticed this and tried to use his genius to counteract it

by thinking of innovations within this form.

And Xerxes is a wonderful example:

The arias become shorter. There are far more different, shorter passages

in which the story progresses.

That means there isn't always a standstill in the arias

where the music alone is dominant,

the narrative is continually moving forward.

That's what's new.

But ultimately it clearly didn't achieve the success he'd hoped for.

Xerxes was probably only performed five times: then the play was removed from the repertoire.

Its time in London was over.

Shortly after that Handel would "only" write oratorios.

These were not intended for the stage –

and musically they were probably his greatest works of all.

Basically it was essential, so-called historically

informed performance practice:

it's done a great deal for this music by going "back to the roots"

and using the musical tools that were available at the time –

it's filled this music with a lot more life, music from the high baroque,

the first half of the 18th century, with a very strong emphasis on rhythm.

All of that was necessary in order to really bring this music to life again.

Not just Xerxes, but all the operas of this period.

With its tighter form, Xerxes offers a lot of possibilities

to really stay on the ball and maintain the tension.

The quick and contrasting changes between individual arias

and mini-arias make this easier too.

In this brilliant production by Stefan Herheim the whole thing

simply becomes an incredibly entertaining and lively evening.

Ever since opera began, with Monteverdi,

the singers were the big stars

and 80 per cent of the total budget always went on them.

What was left went on a small orchestra and maybe a little chorus and some sets.

This cult of the star was huge

and it reached its peak in Handel's time.

The Italian castrati, who were distinguished by an enormous vocal range,

over three octaves,

and with a very particular, rather boyish timbre

– they were the non plus ultra of the time.

These castrati were highly sought after and as soon as they went on stage

they were always an immediate success.

We don't have any more castrati today, thank God.

We have two options:

we can either cast the role with a woman, a mezzo,

or with a countertenor –

who have also only been available again for a few decades

and who have now become specialists excelling in this area.

To us of course this countertenor voice still has something remarkable

because it's still exotic, it's a tradition that was interrupted:

in the 19th century it was unknown.

At that time a man singing in such a high register seemed outrageous,

though in the 18th century it was quite normal and no one found it comic

– and now we've almost got back to the stage

where most people no longer find it funny.

They have a very particular timbre in the upper register

and a virtuosity that really suits what's required here.

I'm a director because of the music, not the other way round.

I work in the theatre because of the music.

And my work is always entirely dictated by the music.

It's about taking this composed score

and creating the feeling that it's actually being improvised.

We don't embellish anything and we don't cheapen

something sublime, immediate and centuries old

as if we're pressing the button on a CD player.

Instead we need to feel that the singers are in the here and now

– in a situation that emboldens and encourages them

to produce these sounds completely fresh, here and now, as if they were today's.

Of course we don't try to reproduce the language of the baroque period precisely

– this would be impossible and we don't have the conditions

to read it in our time as it would have been understood then.

What's more important is the work of translation that reveals this mechanism

and of course we have to work with other mechanical signs and meanings.

I quote a great many images that are floating around immediately in our heads;

from films, literature etc.

We have changed the text so that people can feel:

we're not on foreign ground here, but in the centre of where we see ourselves.

We quote entire characters in archetypical form

representing principles such as loyalty, youth, humility,

overconfidence, royal rule, tyranny, despotism etc.

– and that's also reflected in the costumes.

My idea is that it all revolves around the boards that mean the world:

the stage that constitutes the baroque theatre.

The characters were fighting for the right of this world to continue to exist,

to function, so that the audience reacts as it should and

for them to be loved.

These people on stage are actually fighting for the right

behind these masks, behind this artificial, virtuoso disguise of roles,

of a skill that they have spent a lifetime working on for it to keep going,

so that this stage can continue to justify its existence.

2019 Toyota Rav4 Trail Edition Walkaround with Martin - Duration: 3:45.

(upbeat music)

- Hello and welcome to Orleans Toyota.

My name is Martin McAllister and I'm here

to introduce you to the most exciting Toyota

RAV4 to date, the new 2019 RAV4 Trail Edition.

I've been a representative here at Orleans Toyota

for over 14 years and during that time I've seen

many different RAV4 designs.

In this short video, I will point out some

of the distinct features that separate

this vehicle from its competitors

as well as some standard Toyota features

that you will find across the entire Toyota lineup.

I can honestly say, in my opinion, that this

is the best RAV4 I've ever seen.

The new RAV4 comes standard with LED headlights

across the entire 2019 model lineup.

With the wider stance and increased

ground clearance, the 2019 Trail Edition

is designed to handle any driving condition,

especially with the new multi-terrain select dial

where you can select driving modes for mud,

sand, rock, dirt, and snow.

The Trail Edition comes with 19-inch

Michelin tires along with beautiful black

and silver aluminum alloy wheels.

The Trail Edition comes in a variety of colors

like this blue flame with a white roof.

It also comes with extended roof rails.

These roof rails are taller than other models,

providing better clearance when transporting

canoes, bikes, or cargo using the optional cross rails.

Not only is the 2019 RAV4 a beautiful vehicle

to behold and a blast to drive, it's one

of the safest vehicles on the road today.

Toyota Safety Sense is a suite of safety features

that have come standard on most Toyotas

over the last couple of years.

Toyota Safety Sense includes radar

cruise control, auto high beam system,

lane departure alert, and pre-collision system.

What's new with the 2019 RAV4 is that it now

comes with Safety Sense 2.0.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 adds bicycle detection,

full-range radar cruise control, road edge

detection and lane tracing assist.

The closest competitor to this is the Honda CRV.

However, the Trail Edition has a couple of big

advantages over the CRV.

For the 2019 RAV4, Toyota has upgraded

its 2.5-liter motor and paired it

with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

This translates into more horsepower

than the Honda CRV with better fuel efficiency.

An additional significant difference

between the Toyota RAV4 Trail Edition

and the CRV is towing capacity.

The 2019 RAV4 Trail Edition is able

to tow 3,500 pounds while the CRV

is only able to tow 1,500 pounds.

Also available on the 2019 RAV4

is a digital rear view mirror, rain-sensing

wipers, and ventilated seats.

These features are not available on the Honda CRV.

I love this RAV4 almost as much as I love my iPhone.

The icing on the cake is that the 2019 RAV4

now comes standard with Apple CarPlay

as part of the Entune 3.0 multimedia system.

If you're an existing RAV4 driver or exploring

it for the first time, I'd be happy to offer

you a test drive and answer whatever questions you have.

Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov were involved in ugly scenes after their UFC 229 fight (Picture: Getty Images) Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov are close to putting their UFC 229 saga behind them after agreeing settlements with the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC)

The commission are meeting today (Tuesday 29 January) where the agreements will be presented to the five-person board and voted on, reports the Las Vegas Journal Review

Ryan Bader takes 35 seconds to destroy heavyweight GOAT Fedor Emelianenko Neither McGregor nor Nurmagomedov will be present at the hearing where the board are expected to agree to the settlements

Khabib's teammates, Abubakar Nurmagomedov and Zubaira Tukhugov, have also reached settlements with NAC

Khabib won the fight by submission (Picture: Getty Images) The details of the agreements have not been made public, but will emerge after the commission have voted on them

They are likely to involve fines and suspensions, but any ban will be backdated to the date of UFC 229 which took place on 6 October, nearly four months ago

Advertisement Advertisement  NAC have the ability to fine both men the entirety of their fight purses, which would see McGregor lose $3m (£2

3m) and Khabib $2m (£1.5m) although this is extremely unlikely.  The commission are still withholding half of Khabib's purse from the fight

Khabib jumped from the cage to get involved with a brawl after the fight (Picture: Getty Images) Neither man has a fight scheduled in the UFC with the organisation waiting to learn the result of the hearing before making arrangements

However, both men are expected to fight this year, with Khabib touted to face Tony Ferguson and a scrap between Conor McGregor and Donald Cerrone being mooted

Possibly trying to get on the right side of the Las Vegas power-brokers, the UFC released the economic impact figures of UFC 229 on the city

The event reportedly produced an economic impact of $86.4m on Vegas, according to Applied Analysis

UFC president Dana White said: 'During the build up to UFC 229, I said it was going to be the biggest event in UFC's history, and now we have all the numbers to prove it

'Khabib vs. McGregor smashed our records for pay-per-views, social media impressions, and global viewership, and now we know it set records for economic impact here Las Vegas

Gabby: Oh, that's important, yeah.

Anne: Yeah, I know, and it's, but you know what?

It made me start to think, there's a lot of talk about auditioning and –

Gabby: Mm-hmm.

Anne: I want to know like, I audition for my agents, I audition for other jobs that

come in, you know, through my email.

Gabby, sometimes it feels like I'm auditioning all day, and some people I have heard say,

you know, it's your job.

Auditioning is your job.

So I think we should talk about auditioning.

How much is too much, or how much do you do?

Gabby: Yes.

Oh gosh.

Yeah.

Anne: What are your thoughts on that?

Gabby: To be fair, we have to look at like all the, the opinions or thoughts on this,

and you're right.

I've heard over the years a lot of people, some of them even agents, say, "you know,

your job is auditioning."

Basically that's where our efforts should primarily be spent all day.

The entrepreneur in me has a little bit of a problem with that.

Anne: Ah yes, Gabby.

I'm so glad you said that.

Gabby: Yeah.

Yeah.

The entrepreneur in me, the business owner is like "umm yeah, that's basically working

for free."

Anne: Yeah, when you talk about – yeah.

When you talk about money, your money in and money out [laughs] comparison, you know, where

does that stand?

And I, you know look, I understand if I get auditions from my agents, and there's a little,

I think there's an extra step in there, number one, because I want to think that my agent

of course thinks I'm capable, and therefore the audition has been passed on to me.

So there's a little bit, there's a couple of people involved in that, and I feel like,

"oh, I should honor that."

You know, and let's audition for that.

Gabby: Yes.

Anne: And some of these auditions, Gabby, I don't know if you want to talk about it

now, but you know there's pages, and you know, sometimes people expect that whole audition

to take place, and that's not just a second of work.

That's like, you know, audition, process, edit, and we're talking sometimes people

expect over a minute.

Oh my goodness.

Gabby: The truth that you are speaking right now.

I had an audition this morning –

Anne: Right?

Gabby: It cracked me up.

I look at the script, the script is huge.

And I'm like, I literally, I think I read about a minute and a half, and I went, "that's

all you're getting."

[beep] And I walked out of the booth.

Anne: And you know, and you'll see specs too.

It'll say, "read both, read all the way through."

Gabby: No, no.

Anne: And then directions, "on one mp3 or two MP3s," I don't know.

That to me just, it [laughs] –

Gabby: It's being taken advantage of.

Anne: I – yes.

Gabby: Seriously.

I believe that.

Anne: I get a little bit like, hair raised on the back of my neck.

Gabby: As do I.

Anne: Really?

Like –

Gabby: As do I.

When we all know that statistically people listen for less than 15 seconds on average,

the idea of requesting any audition over a minute in length and getting super specific

about its delivery [laughs] it's abusive.

I believe it is.

Anne: I – yeah.

Gabby: I won't honor that unless it's like you said, it's coming from an agent, if

there's a very specific source, if they're asking for a special circumstance, mm yeah,

OK.

I'll do that.

Anne: Yeah.

Me too.

Gabby: But not just any old rando that decides to send me a script.

Anne: Oh my gosh.

If it comes from anything, any other source – I mean, unless it's a direct email, right,

that's asking me for, and I know the person and they're asking, like you said, it's

a special circumstance.

Gabby: Right.

Anne: But if it's just an audition that comes in, let's say maybe from a pay-to-play,

or you know, that kind of thing, maybe even a referral, and there's a page or two, I'm

only giving a few [laughs] you know, like maybe 20, 30 seconds at most if that, what

I think will be able to grab the gig as much as I need to do.

Other than that, no, I, I do feel that it's abusive.

Gabby: Such a fascinating conversation, and I know we're going to piss some people off

with this, and I'm all right with that.

[laughs]

Anne: [laughs]

Gabby: There are many coaches, many voice actors who, when it comes to pay-to-play,

they talk about auditioning 20, 30, 40, I've heard upwards of 60, auditions a day.

Anne: Yeah, yeah, me too.

Gabby: That's insane.

Anne: Personally for me, Gabby, that's not my style.

You know, hey, to each his own, but here's my thought on it.

If I can have direct inquiries rather than me having to go and audition and spend that

time auditioning, editing, submitting, if I could have direct inquiries about jobs – let's

say, "I've got, you know, a page of this.

How much would you charge?"

– hell, I'm going for that method [laughs] before I'm going to spend money, my own, my

own time in the booth like half of my day, because I'm actually negotiating money rather

than taking a chance on somebody even listening.

So for me, it makes better business efficiency sense to accept direct inquiries, and do whatever

it takes to make my business searchable, right, and findable, so that people can submit those

types of jobs to me.

Gabby: And it's why you and I stress the relationship piece, so much, about building

relationships and, you know, production housing, and casting directors, agents and even direct

clients because that's what it affords you.

It cuts down on so much of those jobs that are maybes.

Anne: Right.

Gabby: And significantly increases the booking ratio from your auditions.

Anne: Exactly.

Your stats are better.

Gabby: Yeah!

Anne: Especially if you're good and efficient, sure, if you can do 50 or 60 a day, that's

fine.

Go ahead.

Gabby: I wouldn't be doing this, seriously –

Anne: Yeah.

Gabby: Like I wouldn't do this for a living if I had to do 50 or 60 auditions a day.

Anne: Yeah.

Gabby: No.

I'm out.

Anne: You know, there's too many other things that I, I need to do for my business, and

here's the thought.

Again, it's not just – OK, when your business is to that point, right, where you can outsource

everything, but what you're doing in the booth, right, I think that's great.

Gabby: Mm-hmm.

Anne: But you know, in terms of until you get to that place, right, I need to make my

time as efficient as possible.

And being in my booth auditioning all day is not necessarily the best use of my time

in terms of growing my business and growing my relationships with clients so that I can

get more business or growing my web presence, growing my marketing presence so that I can

have more opportunities at my fingertips or at my voice, so to speak.

[laughs]

Gabby: [laughs] At my microphone.

Anne: At my microphone, yeah, there you go.

Gabby: What about the stress factor?

Every time I talk to people who are like slaves to their pay-to-play and the auditions that

are coming in, they're so stressed out, and they're so, just, they're wound so

tight by the process that I am "like, man, that's not going to make for some good auditions."

Anne: But here's the deal.

I think the process of working yourself to a place, and here's where I'm going to give

some props maybe to that style, is that if you are doing a ton of auditions a day and

you get really good at it, there's a certain, there's certain skills that that helps develop.

It will help you to develop your ear quicker, and of course your editing skills will probably

get pretty darn quick, if that's how you want to do that.

But again to get to that space and get to that place, I think it takes a long time.

And for me again it's not necessarily my choice of how to do that.

it's not to say that I don't audition.

That's not it at all.

I just am very particular.

I will, I have like a level.

Auditions from my agents are first, always.

Gabby: Priority levels.

Yeah.

Anne: Priority levels.

It stems from that.

And then other than that, I have certain things that I need to do to keep my business running

smoothly and efficiently, and it's not to say I'm going to stop what I'm doing to

audition, but I'm auditioning late at night sometimes.

So.

Gabby: I have designated times.

Anne: Yeah.

Of auditioning?

Gabby: In my workday, built in, yep.

Anne: Oh nice.

Gabby: When I audition –

Anne: What's your schedule like?

Gabby: So it's first thing in the morning for anything that came in overnight.

Anne: Yes.

I have that too.

Gabby: So I might have anywhere from like three to eight depending on the day, but it's

all at once.

I get in the studio, I hit record and it's boom, boom, boom, boom, boom.

All in a row.

And then chopping them up in postproduction.

That's morning.

And usually it takes me anywhere from 15 minutes to 45.

Immediately after that I move onto any jobs that I have to do that are paid gigs that

are self-directed, and I do it again at like 4:00.

Anne: So let me just calculate this out.

So eight auditions, right?

You said anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes.

Correct?

Gabby: Yes.

Mm-hmm.

Anne: So that's two to six minutes per audition.

Gabby: Yep.

Correct.

Anne: So I think that's fantastic.

And I know that people who say they do multiple, llike 10, 20, 30, 40, they've got the efficiency,

you know they've got their process down so that they're efficient, I think – how

long did it take you to get that efficient at auditioning?

That's a question.

Gabby: [laughs] Oh my God.

Anne: Because I think, well, right? it's, that's a – and I think there's where you

grow your skills, so I say if you're going to audition so you're growing your skills,

to develop a better ear, to be better at auditioning, to get quicker at editing, sure, I think that's

great because it's all a learning process.

But I don't know that's a business practice that after I got efficient, I would necessarily

maintain or keep in terms of running my business because I am hoping that the time that you're

not auditioning, you're spending time on your business so that you can get direct inquiries

that are asking you for quotes on, you know, what it would take to complete a job for a

client, and I think that that's a good plan or a good strategy.

Gabby: Yeah, but I think that question of how long does it take to get there, I mean,

– so once again, yes, than 10,000 hour rule, my God is that real.

Anne: Exactly.

And some days it doesn't apply because I'm my own worst critic, right?

Gabby: Production and audio editing, it's so detail oriented, and it's such a precise

process that it does take people a really long time.

I mean, I have been editing for 22 years now?

Oh my God.

Anne: Yeah.

Gabby: That's a loooottt of time invested.

Anne: Well, yeah.

Gabby: And please bear in mind I began editing with tape and razor blades.

Anne: Yeah.

Gabby: Predigital, analog.

Anne: I'm the first to give Gabby props [laughs] because you are the editor that I am not.

[laughs] You know, I mean, that's – you do.

As a matter of fact for the VO boss podcast, Gabby takes care of all the editing, and she's

amazing at it.

And so I, I gladly give that to you because I am just not at that level.

To be honest with you, I don't desire to be at that level [laughs] but I'm at the level

where I can submit auditions, but –

Gabby: Yeah.

But there it is.

it's a desire thing.

But you're right, I mean in my case, you know, it's cumulative years and years and

years of doing it, with as a result, yeah, I can get my auditions out really quickly.

But sometimes I also meet people – a student earlier this week I had a conversation with,

he was spending so much time on his postproduction and preparing an audition.

I am like no, no, no, no, no.

Clean, out the door.

Clean, out the door.

You cannot nitpick, and stress, and process, and tweak, and treat that audio like it's

a final job.

There is no time for that.

Anne: I think that there's – ok, so there are some people that will say, you know, get

your audio as nice as possible, right, as clean as possible in your audition because

people are judging you on that.

So what are your thoughts?

About that?

Gabby: I agree with that, but I think there's a difference between clean and presentable

Anne: Mm.

Gabby: – and what some folks are trying to do.

Ok, so here's the way I look at this.

As a girl, this is the best analogy I have.

This is, "I've got on a little bit of makeup, right, and I look decent," OK, versus

"I have a full face for evening with smoky eye –

Anne: I was going to say [laughs]

Gabby: You know, "like crazy lipstick and like, you know, I spent all this time."

Anne: The day versus night, there you go.

Gabby: Yes!

Anne: Day makeup versus night.

Gabby: I still look good!

I still – I'm not like the creature from the Black Lagoon right now, but [laughs] I

see people do that with their audio all the time.

They bypass just clean and easy in favor of a lot of bells, whistles, tricks, excess removal

Anne: Music and production, sound effects.

Gabby: – processing, yeah.

I'm like, stop all that nonsense.

It's just a waste of time.

The thing that I really want everybody to remember is when it comes to these auditions,

at the end of the day, you're applying to be the voice actor.

You're not applying for a postproduction job.

Anne: True.

Gabby: So stop doing it.

Anne: Solid advice right there.

Gabby: Yeah.

Anne: Yeah, solid advice.

Gabby: Are auditions necessary?

Yes, of course.

Of course they're.

Anne: Yes.

Gabby: But the ideal –

Anne: Are they part of our job, Gabby?

Gabby: They are, they're part of it.

They're not all of it though.

Anne: Yeah.

Gabby: And I think the ideal for any working professional in this industry is to get to

the place where you audition less but book more.

Anne: Exactly.

Audition less and book more.

And how do we get to that spot, Gabby?

Gabby: Relationships.

It's relationship building.

Anne: Yeah.

Gabby: A lot of it, a lot of it's relationship building, and it's your profficiency as

a voice actor so the client knows, "I can just book you.

I don't need to audition you.

I just need to know I can hire Anne, and she's got this."

Anne: And I'm going go one step further and say again, it has to do with your business

presence and our storefront, [laughs] right?

So you know, get that storefront.

So many people that think about their website, and their email, and their client communication,

you know, as the very last thing, in reality I think you guys need to kind of shift those

priorities so that your forward facing presence toward your potential client is professional,

trustworthy, just something that people want to purchase, and [laugh] you know, lately

this time of year when everything's on sale, I have been shopping a lot.

So I've been looking online at different storefronts.

And you as a voice artist, you're a storefront.

Gabby: I agree.

Anne: And don't, you know, don't cast aside the website, thinking that's the last thing

you need to do.

It really needs to have more consideration.

Gabby: Yeah, you and I book all the time directly from clients who don't know us yet, who haven't

developed personal trust, and they find us, and just based on what they see and read,

they hire us.

Anne: Exactly.

And that goes not just with the website, but for, you know, great content that's on your

website that includes like, you know, text written content about you, what you, who you

are, what you do, what does your business do, as well as some really solid demos that

speak to your audience.

I think that's important too.

Demos can go, you know, that whole idea of, when people used to book off their demos,

I still book off my demos.

Gabby: Mm-hmm.

Anne: And so I don't think that's a lost art anymore.

Gabby: No.

Anne: I have some demos that really speak to my audience, and I book off of them, and

hell, I'd much rather do that than have to audition.

Gabby: Amen.

Anne: [laughs]

Gabby: Tell us what you guys think.

We want to hear from you.

We want to hear your opinion about this.

Where do you guys stand on this debate?

Is auditioning our job?

Or is it just a portion?

You tell us.

Anne: And how much?

How much do you audition every day?

We'd like to know.

Gabby: Email us, message us.

[outtakes]

1 Anne: All right, I'm starting my recording.

I'm changing over my audio.

Gabby: You a sexy bitch.

Anne: [quiet laugh, then manical laugh]

2 Gabby: I've been in the goofiest [beep]

mood all day.

3 Anne: I'm gonna grab my coffee.

Gabby: OK.

Anne: I've literally had one sip.

Gabby: Oh, I'm like on cup number seven, so.

[laughs]

4 Anne: Blah, bla-bla-bla blah.

Blah, bla-bla-bla blah.

5 Anne: "Take one is straight, and take two

has an unacknowledged wink."

Who writes this?

Not just a wink.

Gabby: Unacknowledged, yeah.

Anne: Unacknowledged.

"I saw you winking at me, but I did not acknowledge."

Gabby: "But I did not acknowledge you."

People just need to get laid.

That's my [laughs]

Anne: [laughs]

Gabby: People in advertising just don't get laid enough, I think that's – and this

is the result.

Anne: You know, that's going into an outtake.

Holy crow.

Holy crow! [laughs] It's all that training, 20 years, Gabby.

20 years working in a high school.

20 years of trying not to like swear and say "oh shoot.

[laughs] Oh shoot!"

Gabby: I love we have like a bunch of people, and we're together, and like you, you're

like "OK, people.

[clapping] All right.

This is what we're doing."

Anne: Like, like clapping.

[clapping] "Come on, all right."

Gabby: Immediately.

And I love it.

Anne: "Attention at the front, please."

Gabby: I love –

Anne: "Attention at the front."

Gabby: I love watching you do that.

Anne: "I'm waiting.

I'm waiting."

Gabby: That's a total personality shift.

[both laugh]

Anne: "I'm waiting."

Gabby, you'd just be like, "shut the [beep] up."

Gabby: [laughs] OK.
