I feel terrible for laughing at this. Yeah you should.
It's so funny. But it's so funny!
Hi guys, welcome to another episode of Coffee Break,
where we get 3 guys and 2 girls to talk about things that are a buzz on the Internet.
Bzzzzz. We are so lame.
Alright, so let's see what we are talking about today.
Basket cover of destiny.
Walao, the suspense. This is actually...
BAM! Woah.
The heck? Blindfold!
Oh my god, why got ball ball one?
Okay, so what is it, it's a blindfold obviously.
Actually this one is not only a blindfold by the way, this one is an eye mask.
Ah yeah. If you put in the fridge right...
Huh really ah? Ah, you feel, you feel.
Oh my god! Huh, what's inside?
Oh there's hard thing inside. Oh is that jelly?
Ths ice pack thing.
You know what would have been great?
This would have been great for Bird Box!
Yes! Imagine, if she was just blindfolded with this cooling pad on her eyes,
she would have not have that eye bags at the end of the show.
Never be tempted to take them off 'cos it will be like 'Oh, shiok'.
Like, "Malorie!"
So we are talking about Bird Box today, 'cos it's all the buzz on the Internet now.
Have you guys all watched Bird Box? Yes!
Wow, you guys are all so happy about it ah. Yes, I love it.
I had to watch... ok, honestly I was putting it off, but I had to watch it because someone told me I'm going to be in this episode,
talking about Bird Box, then I was like, 'Ok lo, I watch." Eh, same eh!
Is it?
For those people who haven't watch the movie, it is on Netflix, released last year in fact, in 2018.
It's a post-apocalyptic kind of thriller movie based on a novel from 2014. Same name right?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So I actually did not know that it was a novel in the first place, I just heard about the movie. Yeah, same.
Released on the 21st of December, and apparently Netflix reported the biggest 7 day viewership,
for any of it's original films to date, a lot of people watched Bird Box within that 7 days after its release.
Alright, so there will be a lot of spoiler in this episode,
so if you guys want to enjoy the movie without any spoilers, go and watch it first, then click back here.
Alright? Watch now!
Pause and open Netflix.
So, the film is actually essentially about this lady Malorie, who's played by Sandra Bullock.
The movie kind of cuts between like a flashback of what happened, and also currently what's happening la.
The main plot point is that she is travelling down the river to find a community,
with this 2 kids, affectionately, I guess, named Boy and Girl.
They are running away from this supernatural entity that you don't get to see.
If you, for example, see this mysterious invisible creatures, you will be compelled to commit suicide.
Kill yourself, or die in some way. Yeah.
Did you like the movie in the first place or not?
Go from.. everybody! Did you like the movie? Okay.
I watched like... No, in one word, yes or no?
My question was simple. Preparing to give a speech.
He was ready already. Can discuss this later.
Yes I liked it! Okay, you liked it.
I liked it. Yeah.
Wa, all of you liked it!
I thought it was rather not... I thought you say one word?
Contrary to what you guys said, I think it's not worthed the hype.\
It's okay as a film, not fantastic, but it's fun la, but it's not great.
Now we can talk about why you liked it, go! Okay.
I was gonna say like, don;t be too cuaght up by the hype.
If you ride the hype, I believe you will be disappointed but if you just purely go to Netflix and you're like,
'Let's click on the banner that's on right now,' right, press play right, I think it's gonna be okay.
I was going to say, 'cos that's exactly what I did.
Because, the reason why I watched it, because it was in December right?
And I only watched it last weekend?
I actually liked the storyline until the end, which is what.. yeah, we will talk about it later.
That's my overall consensus. What about you, Renae?
I thought it was good but I would have enjoyed it more if I was not affected by all the crazy hype. Right.
'Cos I'm just waiting for it to be like, super amazing and mind-blowing,
I thought the river scenes were quite draggy, like, I just want to know what happen, I don't want to keep seeing her paddling and paddling for hours.
I think I followed it because of the hype eh.
Then when I watched it, then I was like 'eh, not that great.'
But, I only felt that it was good when I read the backstory of it.
Someone was actually explaining on Facebook, the deeper meaning of this. So what is that?
It's actually about depression. Depression can't be seen, so it's like the monster.
Then I realised, oh my god, it's damn genius, there's like a deeper meaning to it.
Did you know they actually have, they actually shot scenes with the monster? Oh they did!
Yeah, but in the end, the director was like, 'You know what, the monsters didn't look as menacing as they would be."
If they actually followed more of the source material, the film would have been way, way darker. I see.
That was something that the director didn't want, because he felt that this kind of thriller films had to sort of give people hope.
Sometimes when you watch the film, and then people try to bring out meaning, it a bit tenuous.
So I feel like sometimes it's a bit annoying la, when peopl try to explain too much about it.
There were too many things happening at once, and I feel there's many of this sub plots which were happening within the home of the guy.
Whichever guy... Greg!
I would say a lot of the characters were not really fully explained or fully developed.
I really thought Olympia had a rather tragic story.
Olympia's character was the sort of, best developed one in the entire film. I think so too.
She establishes very early that 'Oh, I'm like, not strong.'
For people like Tom, characters like Tom, in the end it was like self-sacrificial in the sense for him to save, I guess Malorie.
But then the rest of them are really like, a bit touch and go lo.
It's a social dynamic, social politics kind of movie.
It get like, quite predictable in the sense that it's already been done many times.
So what's your takeaway from this film?
I always liked films that are a little bit post apocalyptic, how you can sort of try to figure out through the movie, how you figure out shit.
In a lot of post-apocalyptic scenarios right, the people are the most dangerous things about the situation. Right.
Like, the movie also sort o, never really go in depth about it, like how people die, but they mention about what you see, your deepest fears, something like that.
And then apparently, according to one theory, this is a supernatural entity,
so what happens is like, it traps you in your deepest fear, and then after that takes control of your body so you end up walkingand killing thyself. Apa (what in malay)?
And one of the things I'm trying to always kind of figure it out, is that why are people who are mentally unsound not affected by this monster?
Someone put it like very poetically, they were like it's because people with depression and things like that,
their daily lives they are already facing their demons, so they have so much practice, so when they see the demons they are like 'oh I have already faced this so many times.'
That's so deep. And also, they have to fight the desire to kill themselves a lot as well.
So they already have that inner strength. That makes a lot of sense.
In the book it's not so pleasant. Is it?
The situation towards the end, was not so nice.
Towards the end before Malorie and the kids reach the School of the Blind right,
Actually she manages to bring the kids there but she sort of left behind.
There would be a very intense stand-off scene where she threaten to dig her eyes out so she can force the creatures, 'I can never see you', you know sh* like that.
When she reaches the School of the Blind, actually a lot of sighted people actually did that.
They dug out their eyes when there was one time one of the monsters broke in and it got quite bad. What the heck?
The monster has some sort of consciousness ah?
That's very strange, because the monsters can make decisions ah? Like. 'Aiya, you dig, you no need dig la!'
It's a normal horror movie, with a lot of questions, but now with this deeper meaning it gives more feels to it.
When you watch it, like, 'Ah, actually yeah, this filmmaker trying to change the world or something'
I mean, I get where you are coming for, I feel like this movie is not something for passive viewing la.
Overall ratings, what do you say?
I will give it a 6.6.
I will give it like a 7.
I will give it a 2/5. *gasp*
Can we like... are we like, on the same scale?
Overall, I don't think it's a good watch.
I found it quite spooky, so 7/10.
My rating is 5. I think that I only watch it just for the hype,
so don't watch it if you are not into it.
I think you should watch it to get the memes. so don't watch it if you are not into it.
I think you should watch it to get the memes.
Oh, speaking of memes,
one of the thing that has come out, and I think has provided the hype for the film, is the stupid things that people do on the Internet.
Oh my god. And we are talking about, the Bird Box Challenge.
Putting it out there, we've done the Bird Box Challenge many times before in the whole TSL history.
We've done smelling things... come on! Oh! Putting it out there, we've done the Bird Box Challenge many times before in the whole TSL history.
We've done smelling things... come on! Oh!
There are tons of people online, after seeing this whole Bird Box movie,
take the chance to go and blindfold themselves to live their life blindfolded.
This mum, who grab their 2 kids, then there's this small little toddler. Yeah!
Then they chiong (rush)... you know what? Let's watch that!
Let's watch that now. Oh god.
First of all, why in the world would the parent upload this? yeah, why would they allow the child to do this?
Look at this, look at this, look at this. Watch it.
So they've closed the window, run, run, run...
Oh!
I feel terrible for laughing at this. Yeah you should.
It's so funny. But it's so funny!
What's this?
Are they just walking around blindfolded? Yes!
So scary, oh no, are they going to fall down? I hope they roll down.
Oh he did! Where is he?
Ouch. No, turn around.
Wait, that's the guy who.. is that the guy? The guy who fell down? I'm pretty sure he got badly injured.
Guys, guys, this is creative editing guys.
Total gap time right... That he can run down the stairs and just lie down.
I see the Netflix tweet! I see the Netflix tweet! Scroll down to the Netflix tweet.
So, one of the things that has happened from this Bird Box Challenge,
is that Netflix actually has officially tweeted out to tell people to stop doing the stupid challenge. This is so funny.
Oh no, it's 24 hours Bird Box Challenge. Yeah so this person right, actually lived her life 24 hours,
Blindfolded? I certainly hope she's not drunk, I think.
Oh no, she drove! Must say, the blindfold she chose though, good choice.
Okay, what are your views on this challenge?
Okay, firstly right, don't do it.
I think it's very stupid leh, it's just blindfolded walking around.
If you don't want to buy blindfold, just off the lights in your room... Or you close your eyes, use your eyelids.
Use your eyelids, just close your eyes and walk around. Your built-in blindfold.
Oh my god, anyone doing it right, you all really need to go and think about your life again, seriously what are you doing?
Let me tell you why, it's because of videos like this right, that get 2 million views... It's the videos!
Are you serious? Yeah, 2 million!
Mother of Jesus Christ! It's not worth it!
You guys got to be more discerning and choose things that obviously make sense la,
and things like the Bird Box Challenge would not make sense.
Overall, do you think the movie has made a positive or negative impact to the world out there?
I think for the viewers who, like Xavier, manage to find the deeper meaning thing behind it right,
I thought that that would have been some kind of educational insight.
I always believe that there's more good done than bad, even though the Bird Box Challenge is... it's so stupid! Don't do it!
Whatever the filmmaker was trying to convey, all the deeper meanings,
is unfortunately overshadowed by the memes, which I think is quite sad.
And I think that the Bird Box Challenge right, if you wanna tie it through a better cause,
like raising awareness for the blind that kind of thing, Yeah!
like how difficult it is for them to live their daily lives, there would have at least been a message.
Imagine like a visually impaired person hearing about the Bird Box Challenge, and everyone is just joking about it, but it's their life.
The movie itself, just talking about the movie itself right,
just watch it as like, for fun.
Don't look too much into it.
Like me la, I just watch it then I just easily scared by jump scares, but basically that's what I got out of the movie.
Yeah, don't do stupid things like run blindfolded on the street?
Yeah, think about the consequences for your actions, and I agree with Renae.
Be sensible. Watch it for yourself, after you watch the movie can leave a comment below about what you feel about the film la.
